Wow, great variety! Yum, peas...nothing can compare with fresh peas from the garden. What do you do with the Italian dandelion Friday? Do you eat it like you would other greens?

Yes, but usually in a salad (for me). I'll plant it in a big pot this year and let it grow, Next year you harvest the baby greens in the spring until they get too bitter. DH thinks I'm nuts to be growing dandelions.

To anyone that makes a mission out of slaying dandelions in the yard, I can see where intentionally growing them in the garden might seem strange

I've never eaten them before but they're probably good for you.

We were in north FL and it would get cold enough to freeze in the winter. I was able to start some things in January and have them ready to set out in March. Our greenhouse had sides that could be opened up and we used it most of the year with things that needed a bit of shade. About the most tropical thing I grew were a couple of pineapple plants.

We were in the process of converting the greenhouse to a duck enclosure when we got word DH got a job here in WY and we moved here in spring of last year. Had to cancel my duck order and re-home the chickens. This is a picture of the greenhouse conversion, almost done.

That's a nice looking greenhouse, I can see how it would make a perfect duck enclosure. That's quite a move. Guess you won't be growing any pineapple anymore though

Sorry - had to bring the sprouts in and get the boiled eggs off of the stove!

I have Bulgarian giant leeks, 4 kinds of tomatoes, snap peas, green beans, cabbage, 3 kinds of basil, cabbage, purslane, Italian dandelion, lemon balm, snow peas, lemon and tendergreen cucumbers, and a few other flowers. The garlic is already coming up outside. I've got a ton of other stuff to direct sow outside in a month or so.

tried 3 kinds of peppers, but none germinated since it's probably too cold. I'm going to try again with the baggie/coffee filter method, and use the top of the eco-glow brooder plate since I don't have a seedling mat.

Yum yum yum. I'm a huge fan of the snap peas, I hope I can get a bunch to grow this spring. I didn't get my garlic in since we had just moved, but I'm going to try a spring planting. I've eaten dandelions from my yard before; I think I made pancakes with the heads.

I love the use of the brooder! Use what you have!


On a different note I can tell my son has infected me, I've got the sore throat. Well tomorrow should be fun. Better get some rest now.

Way back when I first started attending field trials in the spring the Pa. Dutch ladies would serve a wilted dandelion salad with a bacon/sweet and sour dressing -

I haven't had it in years.

Sounds great! I'll have to try something like that next year, if this experiment works.

I admit I've never grown them or eaten them from the yard or anything but I think I've bought it at the store before. Either that or I bought it only to give to the chickens haha
