Genetics - bottom line is we always know who the momma is , but the daddy remains to be proven. My father's side - pretty sure they are primarily Scottish. As for Mom - awfully dark haired and complected for a German - me too. I told her once that someone must have sneaked across the border. ( She did not appreciate that.) My gut says Italian or Jewish DNA. Some day for the heck of it, I may do a DNA test.

My last name is Ottman and first German Ancestor came here in the 1750s.

My DW went to Israel by way of Turkey. In Turkey she was told that Ottman was a variation of Ottoman and that her Husband must be Turkish and from the Ottoman family. They wanted to know where I was...I am very happy that I did not go on that Trip!

Ottoman Turks ruled the German area not that long ago. Are you sure you do not have some Turkish DNA in your Family?

Germany used to be huge and included most of Poland. Remember that the idea of Germany really only started around 1800. Before that there were Bavarians, Saxons, Silesians, Prussians, etc. The Prussians who united all of Germany were mostly blond and blue eyed.

Anyway, I was always told growing up, whenever we went to Germany, that I was a throw back... looked exactly like the family there (my dad's dad side). All brown haired some brown eyed some blue, shorter (men 5'8 to 5'10 and women 5 even to 5'4"), with square faces, strong jaws and wide sholders.

My dad looks like his mom, she was also 100% German, but was the spitting image of Olive Oil (Popeye's girlfriend). Her hair was black, but my dad was bond.

Or that all Italians are swarthy, dark haired and dark eyed. Like I said "We always know who the mommas are, but the daddies can be questioned." I was once told by a red haired green eyed Italian, "It all depends upon who was seducing our women."

When a Jewish woman has children they are considered Jewish. AS you pointed out Sour, you know who the mother is. Fathers can be elusive.
