BYC Café

Oh I hate rats. We used to have problems with them when I lived in CA. They used to climb up the palm trees and sit in our bottle trees to eat the pods. You could hear the crunching through the window. Neighbors had a ton of ivy on their slope and they lived in there.

Here we just have field mice. They don't bother me nearly as much.

Sounds terrifying!!

We've never had rats before, so this is quite the unpleasant experience. They're cute, but destructive, and I'm getting worried about the impact they may be having :(.

We'd set out the giant snap traps with peanut butter- like 6 or 7 of them for a week, then put the traps away for a week. We finally figured out how to keep them from getting into the attic.

We still do not know what is in the ceiling. I worry about them chewing wires and starting a fire. I suppose if hubby doesn't do anything i will. Maybe that is what he is waiting for. He does have a titanium rod in his neck so it is hard for him to look up.

Ya, we're attacking on a few fronts. They're living in the basement (crawlspace, outside access only) and getting into the walls but not in the house.
They're also in the barn and chicken coop. We've been researching things everyday for weeks :p. Hopefully we can make some headway eventually, and be better prepared next fall.

I bought a pair of live traps. Going to put hardware cloth on the squirrel trap in case whatever it is can get through the wire.

The rats are huge here!

Yeah but they might start out small and blunder into the trap. I have lots of HW cloth, i got it on sale.
What got rid of them here is just one byte bate--The adults take it back to the nest and kill the babies. Rats have a lot of babies all the time
