My first ever pet was a turtle that I got for my 5th birthday. After a couple of months it stopped moving around much. My parents made me release it in a creek by my school.

It wasn't until many years later that I learned that the creek was a storm water runoff that went into the city sewage system. :(

It also didn't dawn on me until I was much older that turtles hibernate.

Your story reminded me of my son's first pet. He was about 4 and I got him a blue parakeet. Wretched mean little bird, son named him Buzzy because that bird loved to clamp on and bite...bite hard. One day DS came running into the kitchen all excited. "Mommy, Mommy Buzzy learned a new trick!" Yep, Buzzy learned how to lay on his back with his feet in the air. RIP Buzzy! DS hasn't wanted a pet bird since. The end.

not sure I always had a pet but memory of most was my dog Sandy a Papillon
that followed me one day home

Awww I love Papillons. I wish one would follow me home lol
