@CapricornFarm thought I posted this last night but evidently not. But anyway, found this article yesterday. Thoughts on it? Do you think it is true/accurate? I am a little nervous about what it says about other animals, particularly small animals and same sex dogs. But then I found some YouTube videos of one of these dogs running around having a grand time with lots of other dogs at the park/on a hike with other dogs and they also live with a husky and are fine so maybe it depends on socialization? Maybe it depends on lines? Like maybe working line dogs are a little harder in temperament than show? Probably depends on socialization I guess too. I want a dog I can do dog sports like agility or nosework with too and smart enough/driven enough for trick training but not so drivey they’re annoying or off the walls. But then I also want to be able to take it hiking and take it to dog friendly stores or restaurants or in public, like downtown or cities or whatever, without it freaking out and being nervous or attacking people or dogs. Seems like aggression and attacks are rare though or don’t happen at all? With good lines and training/socialization. Just not sure if maybe an Aussie or Golden would be a better fit. But then, I don’t really care if it wants to greet people or not as long as it’s not nervous or aggressive. In fact, I would kind of prefer it didn’t run up to people ha but I also think people might be scared of a big, black, shepherd looking dog, even a fluffy one? Most people tend to be. But I guess that could work to my advantage cause if I had an Aussie or Golden, they’re such gorgeous popular dogs, I would probably have everyone stopping me everywhere I went which could get annoying haha but then again, Belgian Shepherds are gorgeous too, especially the long haired varieties, and are pretty rare, so maybe I would still have people stopping me? Did you have a lot of people stopping you in public with yours? I am between the Terv or the Groenendael.

Kelsey, you are overthinking. Visit a breeder and see if you like the parents. Our Belgians both lived in the house with a small pack of Shelites and a few Lhasas. They were fed separately and slept in their crates at night. I never had issues taking them to shows but some of these dogs do not like to be touched by strangers. And they are not comfortable in the heat.

Yeah probably, tend to do that, sorry about that. But also just trying to be prepared/plan and research as much as possible before getting a dog, any dog. I mean, dogs live for 12 years or more so I would rather over plan and over think now than just go to the pet store or the first breeder I find and buy any dog and then find out the hard way that it’s really sick or too energetic or aggressive with people or dogs or tries to eat my cat and chickens, etc. hence the over thinking, trying to think of everything. But of course the looks part and whether or not people will be scared of it is probably totally irrelevant to anything haha plus visiting breeders and/or researching them online or going to dog shows is probably the only way I will know for sure since I am sure there is a huge variety between dogs in every breed, even if the breed supposedly has certain traits, this breeder’s dogs may or may not, so I guess it’s kind of impossible for anyone to answer whether any dog of any breed will be right for me unless I do my own research. But that said, that is good to know that yours lived with so many other dogs and were fine. Makes me feel better. The stranger thing is slightly concerning but maybe I just need to find a breeder with friendlier dogs or train it to tolerate it even if it doesn’t like it (as long as no one is hurting the dog). And that makes sense. Do you think they will be fine in MA or PA?
