O.K. I have only had my girls (4) since August 2018. Will someone please tell me what a "Broody Hen" is. My girl's don't have a rooster they do have two Guniea cocks and two Guniea hens that they hang out with. One of my Guinea hens is laying an egg per day. Just comes into the coop (they all free range during the day) and drops an egg on the ground and leaves. One Guinea hen is a talker once she starts it difficult if not impossible to shut her up (her name is Shelly and she loves to fly) is all this chatter normal?. Thank you for your feedback.

A broody hen is a hen that 'wants' to hatch eggs.
Signs of possible broodiness are:
sitting on a pile of eggs for longer than it takes to lay an egg,
sitting on a nest with no eggs in it for extended periods of time,
walking about clucking incessantly with her wings spread out,
reluctance to mix with the rest of the flock,
a 2 degree rise in core body temperature measured between her breast and her stomach.
The above are a few of the more common indications of broodiness.
There is some debate that broodiness may start long before any of the above indications are observable. It has been suggested that a hen may 'know' at the time of mating that she intends to sit on the eggs she lays once a clutch is established.
There is a guy in Australia who is attempting a study on 'pre broody' behaviour. He suggests that some hens may change their nesting strategy when they intend to sit on the eggs they lay.
For example, a hen may lay eggs in a particular location for a number of weeks and then for so far undocumented reasons, change her laying location. This change may indicate that the hen intends to hatch the eggs she lays in the new location. This behavior if proven may indicate an adaptive behaviour that has not been recognized in non domesticated hens.

A broody hen is a hen that's gone broody...she's sitting on eggs and going to hatch her some young'uns. They don't need a rooster around to go broody but you have to have a rooster if you want chicks.
Guineas are insanely noisy, it will drive you and anybody else within 'ear shot' of them crazy. Yes, it's normal for guineas to be very vocal.
BTW, Welcome to BYC. :frow
