I have a question. How does a rooster go about mating with a hen with no neck feathers?
I mean what does he grab to keep his balance?

Good question! Actually, my roo injured one of my nn girls trying to mate and I had to help her heal.

There are little caps of feathers on their heads and I've seen him grab them there to hold on. My roo is all legs and still young, not a year yet so he's still learning the balance thing. I hope the hens that hatch are big girls, my current hens are rather small and he really is too big for them.

Morning Cafe, hope you all have a good day!
Good morning Cafe. Thanks for the coffee.
Becca, how did your boy do last night? I hope he is feeling better. :hugs

Becca, glad you picked Ocho up. I'm sure he'll feel better at home (and certainly get more attention).

Thanks for the coffee and breakfast Shad!
Good morning all! Thanks for the coffee Shad, and thanks for your concern for my little guy. Ocho is a good little patient, takes his injections like a man and eats as much as he can when I offer him what he likes. So far its warm scrambled eggs ( not so much when they get cold.) And wet layer crumbles that are doctored up with Rooster booster.

He has been up walking around his crate and crowing loud and strong! If I had to guess I'd say he's glad to be home.

Hope everyone has a great day; I will be checking in with updates through the day.

ETA: tagging @Shadrach to keep you in the loop on Ocho's update:hugsthank you for your consideration!

It depends on how big he is and how much she squats. Sometimes they will grab the comb on big combed breeds

It will be interesting to see how that egg goes!

Yes it will. There is progress though, and I have no qualms about assisting if necessary.

I am at work now but looking forward to the weekend and the quail hatch! I have 33 of the 37 still going

Nice results Ron!

I have had wrong end pippers simply hulk their way out of the shell! It was quite impressive.

Yours looks good so far because there is no goo coming out of the pip. One thing that seems common with wrong end pips is that the chick pips early. Give it plenty of time before assisting.
