BYC Café

WOW! You had a toucan and a monkey too!? do you still have them!?

I consider myself animal crazy too but I have had nowhere near as many animals!! Lol

I had a rabbit once and have had plenty of parakeets and fish (few bettas and goldfish) ha but that’s it really. Currently though have the chickens, a cat, and 4 goldfish which need to be moved to a pond or bigger tank. Used to want to get gerbils, guinea pigs, another rabbit, more parakeets, cockatiels, or a conure or something, but now I think I’m going to hold off on all of those. No room for guinea pig or rabbit if I give them a big enough pen/cage and I think I might be allergic to the hay and stuff inside the house, and gerbils I’ve read are really dusty but idk. And indoor birds are so messy and conures are so loud ha although I have heard that lineolated parakeets are really nice and slightly bigger than regular parakeets. You ever heard of those? They are somewhat hard to find but I think there is actually a breeder in my state. They are supposed to be really calm and nice. But I am sure still messy ha

I actually would LOVEEEEE some rodents or reptiles like rats, mice, snakes, geckos, beardies, etc. but my parents hate all of those :hit

I’ve heard rats and mice are super smart and friendly though. So I would much prefer them to a gerbil or hamster but can’t atm. Maybe soon.

But right now I want to focus on getting quail and another dog. I would love goats, sheep, or a horse too but horses are way too expensive and goats and sheep might be too much work. Idk. Thinking of getting some sheep though. They are super cute. Been reading a lot about the difference between sheep and goats and it seems to be so mixed on what people prefer and what to get. Most things I’ve read though said goats are just big trouble makers and like having a 2 year old around, escape artists, etc. but then some said they preferred them cause they had more personality. Sheep are supposed to be sweet though. Idk.

As you can see, I want every single species too, not just every dog breed :lau

Most of these are all just dreams though and not likely a reality. At least not until I can get my own place ha

But I also don’t want too many animals, even small caged ones, cause sometimes it gets overwhelming with too many.

I definitely want quail and a dog though and eventually it’d be cool to have my goats, sheep, horses, etc. but that’s probably a ways off.

Would love to build an aviary though one day. And/or a fish pond.
If you want to try hatching quail I can send you some eggs. They ship quite well.

That makes complete sense! There does seem to be a lot of variety in breeds! I saw a tiny beagle today and I had to ask if she was a beagle because I was like 99.9% sure but I was like wow she seems really small for a Beagle!
Beagles come in different sizes.
And no, I don't have the toucan or monkey any more, that was back in the 80s.

Cavaliers are a toy breed,

Cockers are larger and not as stocky (for their size). Females should be 14" at the shoulders over 14.5" is a disqualification. Males should be 15" at the shoulders and not over 15.5 inches.

Thought so

But wow didn’t realize Cockers were so small either! I always imagined them as more of a medium size breed or close to Labs but I guess not.

Bull Terrier/American Pitt mixes. We've had a few rescues and we've had puppies. Hubs thinks Frank and Abby might be it for him so he wanted to start with puppies again. I disagree these are the last dogs we'll have, but agreed to puppies this time anyway. I'm home, might as well.

Aw that seems like a good mix.

And aw that makes sense. I love puppies mostly so I can train my own way from the beginning haha

Thank you!! I will definitely keep that in mind!! I got an incubator in March so I could join the hatch a long with quail but never did. still need to build a hutch.

That’s true! But I think she said she was small even for a beagle but that she was glad she wasn’t bigger cause she wouldn’t have room ha told her I thought it was a good size for the city and that we also just saw a Golden and some spaniel or hound type dogs and how I didn’t get how people could have such big dogs in the city and she kind of chuckled and was like yeah they wouldn’t fit in my apartment. I thought of that plus the high activity. It seems insane. We also saw lots of small dogs. Much better idea. Anyway, the lady was very nice and this beagle was very sweet. But she had a pretty small head and was just small, looked almost like a puppy just slightly bigger, but apparently she was only going to be as big as she was then. Full grown already.

And ah okay. Wow long time ago.

A toucan...those are the coolest looking birds, I've always loved them. Was it tame enough to hold, etc?

I love them too. They seem awesome!

Good morning Cafe. Thanks for the coffee, Shad.
Cap, Sunny is just adorable. Again, lucky you!
Well, work has begun on digging for the piers. And Fabio slammed into the back of my leg yesterday so I must be doing a great job of making commotion in his pen. Goody.
The Groundhog I rented is useless. Maybe if you live in a century old garden plot where all the stones have been removed and the soil has been tilled and amended for decades the thing might be able to dig down 42". I ended up digging about 90% of the holes that are there by hand and none of them are done, 2 haven't even been started.
I blistered the palm of my hand and felt it tear open. I hate that. I can't find any of my gloves because someone likes to "put things away" but doesn't remember doing it or where he put it. Today should be a regular hoot. Modified goal is to just get one wall of piers dug and poured with the J-bolts set.
An amusing note: my smallest WLH, Peanut, is so bold I swear she'd ride on that Groundhog to watch what came up when I pulled the auger up. She kept following me from hole to hole scratching at the dirt piles I brought up looking for goodies.

I hope your modified plan works (or worked) out smoothly.

Afternoon pot has been brewed - have at it. All lawns are mowed. Tomorrow Dani goes to daughter's and Princess and I head to Maryland. Grand daughter graduates high school on Tuesday. Wednesday we pick up Dani, and Thursday is her surgery.

Congratulations to the grand graduate Sour! And best wishes for Dani's appointment on Thursday.

Careful, you are treading dangerously...:old. My first dog was a very friendly chihuahua. Parents said no to anything bigger.

My parents had a boxer when I was born, but the first dog of my own was a Chihuahua also, I got her when I was about 11. She was a great dog! And friendly except to the one friend of my brothers who used to chase her ( :rant ).

Didn’t realize so many people had Chihuahuas!

I think if I actually met some nice ones I might like them!

:gig Fugly would sometimes come and look inside and crow at me like he was reminding me it was lunch time...hey lady, where's the grubs?
That ime is a good sign.
I ended up training Notch to do this in order to deal with his aggressive behviour at feeding time.
Now instead of it looking like I'm taking over his job by feeding his hens, he comes and 'gets' me close to meal times, I give him first go at the bowl and we walk over to his hens together. Apparently it looks very funny. He struts along beside me looking very pleased with himself and of course, very important and when I put the food down he nods energetically at the bowl and calls his hens to eat. I didn't have any further problems with him after adopting this strategy at feeding time and now I can pick him up during the day without any fuss.
