Just to show we all have our ways no one offers to beat a cockerel
just keep the little buggers from raking us with spurs you can also take those spurs off with a dremel cutoff wheel no blood loss spins fast enough to take it off clean, with that said I have not seen a need to do this here

Hey there thanks for the coffee Shad needed it okay chime in beekissed wrote their opinion we all have one I have a walking stick named one cockerel Randi held him down with that once when he tried to come after me he would peck at BF but kept his distance from me but was great to his flock just my humble opinion View attachment 1867902

I don’t think anyone is out there beating roosters or anything and I myself have pinned hens down a few times, not out of meanness or for long and not really pinning her down since she offers to squat anyway but she insists on pecking me hard all the time, so sometimes I just put my hand out and hold her there temporarily so she stops/cant get me or I just gently shoo her away. I don’t think that’s so bad but idk. And I don’t think holding them down every so often is so bad. I just don’t really agree with the insistent chasing and intimidating and stuff like that. Btw I don’t think mine is doing it to be mean, I think she’s just curious maybe? Or pecks at the pattern? But she does it from behind. Although she does do it from the front too. Idk.

My theory is that young roosters go through a stage where they think they need to challenge us. They can learn that it is not prudent. I have one that has his first batch of hens. He tries to flog me, so I just carry a feed bucket or water jug. He can't get at me and can hurt himself trying. As they get older, they learn that I am just there to feed and water, then leave.

That makes sense. And I think too many people don’t realize they go through a teenage phase and just cull at the first sign of any misbehavior even the slightest. Of course there are probably roos that don’t go through that behavior and some roosters really are dangerous from a young age but still. All animals go through a teenage phase. Even dogs. And even livestock. People don’t realize livestock go through those phases too but of kids and dogs do why wouldn’t livestock?

DD1 turns into a legal adult tomorrow. I think DH & I should get an award for keeping a small, vulnerable human alive for that long.

She's requested I make NFC's Hummingbird Cake. Debby, your desserts will always be fan favorites in our house. :bow Curiosity has gotten the best of me & I'm going to experiment using coconut this time. I might do a little in the batter & a little on the frosting.

I had a RIR that was pushy like that. I would flick her with my finger in the chest and she would look at me like she was stunned by such brutish behavior

@room onthebroom , you do realize that your job is NEVER over, right ?
My Grand ma said something like that once, that the children get older and have children of their own and then there are more Family to worry about!

And thank you for enjoying the desserts (I think coconut would be awesome in it).
