It stopped here for a while. Was able to clean out all the coops. I pull all the straw out every week and put in fresh. Then usually spot clean in between. But all this rain has made that difficult!!!

I think it's such a good idea, especially if salvaging an existing building. Having the chickens in the house here involves a lot of work. Something like your setup would be much more practical; or even something like the more traditional farmhouses here.
Maybe I should design a two story earth bermed building with a barn as the lower level.

What you are describing was the common house in Iceland before about the mid 20th Century. They called it a croft, and they have several you can visit. I cannot imagine living in the second floor where my cow and horse live on the first floor. Chickens would be okay though.
