Ruby doesn't have this dew claw thing going on, but she runs like the wind and sometimes she breaks a regular toe nail. It's a pretty dramatic experience around here, but then Ruby is a drama queen.

Gator was soooo dramatic!!!

The first day we brought him home, my brother picked him up to carry him around and give him a tour of the house and he dropped him in the kitchen.

He wasn’t even high up, maybe a foot or two, barely fell, and he was a BIG puppy anyway, so not a far fall or possible to be injured but he acted so hurt!!

He was limping and everything. Whole nine yards.

My poor brother was so upset lol

We called the vet in a panic all worried he broke a leg or something!!! Vet said sometimes puppies are just dramatic and to give him a few minutes before we rushed down there.

Yup, sure enough moments after we hung up the phone, he was perfectly fine!! Big baby LOL

And that was not the first time he was a drama king.

He fairly frequently faked injuries for sympathy.

Grumbled for attention a lot, talked back when you told him no or that he couldn’t go. Oh we was soooo sassy!!! LOL

I know of two dogs that tore off a dew claw. It's not pretty.

Yeah, I imagine that is awful!! Thankfully, we’ve never had that happen not anyone I know and I think it’s a pretty fast recovery when it does happen? So I’m not too worried but I totally understand why most choose to remove them.

Good videos Kelsey, maybe those retrievers that don't have dew claws need a dew claw glove when they are working in ice


Similar to the blue egg gene in chickens. If the hen has 2, guaranteed her pullet offspring will lay a blue shell since they will have at least 1 regardless of if the father has any blue egg genes. If the father has 2, same thing. Down stream it gets dicey since a hen with one mated to a rooster with one can yield offspring with 2, 1 or 0 blue egg genes.


That is why you always make the first pot of the day!

Yeah that wind will do a number on you. Thankfully there wasn't much here today since the high was about 0°F. Already -8°F at 8 PM tonight.


No, it means there are two on the same paw, usually front paws on dogs that have doubles.


What I read says it is breed dependent. Dew claws on Great Pyrenees are connected to bone. Most breeds are not and they can sometimes be pretty flimsy.


Could be because they dew claws weren't trimmed and they got caught on something? The lady in the second video mentioned that.

Glad you liked them! I thought they were very informative. though I do think the first video could have been wayyyy shorter.

And excellent idea!! Maybe attach little ax picks or ice picks to them.

That would explain why Gators were so solid! Haha

And yeah I think a lot of people forget about that nail since it’s kind of out of the way so it can curl over/into the leg and cause problems. But then again people forget about regular nails too

I see so many dogs with crazy long nails!

I think for the average pet owner, taking the dew claws off is smart since so many forget and I don’t think it would would really hurt the dog not having them if they’re just going on walks or whatever else. But I can see where dogs doing a lot of high intensity/high impact performance stuff like agility, hunting, etc. or very repetitive stuff like fetch and frisbee would need them.

I loved the sass!! Gator would snap the air in sass/talk back too!! Sometimes he would scoot backwards snapping the whole way when you told him he couldn’t go.

He also did it when he was feeling playful lol

He also used to go on strike on walks. When he was tired and didn’t want to walk anymore or when he wanted to go the opposite direction as you, he would just flop down on the ground or plant himself and refuse to move.

One time my brother (different brother) tried to take him running and only got about halfway (maybe a couple miles) before he planted, refused to move, and he had to have his friend pick them up.

Granted, Gator had never really run before so probably wasn’t a smart idea, but I think he would have planted on a walk that long too.

Too far. Turn back.

Sometimes he didn’t want to get out of bed in the mornings either and you practically had to drag him out.

But soooo incredibly smart and he knew tons of tricks.

At my age I can't recall if my dogs (Cockers) had dewclaws or not. But in either case it never caused a problem for them. They had tails docked at 3 days of age. I had to mark the place for vet because vets make the tails way too short for show dogs. I remember he cut them in front of me and I thought I was okay with it UNTIL he picked up the cut off pieces of tail and threw them in the garbage. I nearly had a face plant.
