It's not wrong, it's the circle of life... Everyone needs to eat on this Earth. People get so angry when predators eat their livestock and it's the humans fault for not properly protecting them whether it's fencing, netting, or whatever. The animals are just doing what they were created to do... Survive.
When we bring chickens in to an area that wouldn't otherwise have them in the wild, we are making them vulnerable. It's our responsibility to protect them. Just owning chickens is keeping them from their natural state.

Chickens are meant to free range or have large area to scratch and forage.

I see nothing wrong with your neighbor free ranging even if there is losses in their flock.

There are those that confine theirs in small cages that fit 2 chickens and they have 10 crammed in it, but those 10 may be happy like that.

I tend to not judge how others free range, cage, or house their animals. What works for me may not work for them. What works for you may not work for me.

There are always two sides to everything.

While I understand what you are trying to say, we're not talking about a few losses here. We are talking the entire flock in short order. Even the ducks and geese leave the area when the fish aren't running. Chickens can't do that. There is nothing natural about free ranging chickens in this forest. It is a rain forest, not a typical habitat for a chicken. We have coyotes, raccoons, cougars and bobcats, as well as bald eagles, golden eagles, owls and hawks. They would never have lived here in the wild.

Well that's their issue... Not yours

If they want to have a flock like that then that's their deal. Nothing to stress yourself about or think about.

I want them to be chickens if possible.
I am thankful I have the time to sit and watch my chickens because that’s what I enjoy these days. I also enjoy watching nature when the geese come and rear their young in my front pasture on the ponds. At least I do have something real here. :gig
A lot depends on your view of the chicken and what you want from them.
I guess I prefer my chickens to remain safe in the confines of what I provide them. Of course I only give them what my human mind thinks they need based on what I read and can monetarily provide. They still look like a chicken and eat like a chicken and smell like a chicken (remember now, you like the smell of chickens:gig) and lay eggs like a chicken, so I’m gonna keep them I guess. However, I will say, I would love to have your setup and would probably do things quite a bit differently than I do now. But that is only dreaming on my part.

Carry on with the good chickening my far away friend.

Hope people will look at my ad, & contact me about my Silkie chicks I wanna sell this spring. Money is gonna be a bit tight for us this year, & this is the only way I think of making a little extra cash.
Anybody else having money problems?
