BYC Café

That is what I thought too when I first started with chickens. But some years later I bought an incubator to save the clutch of a broody that was taken out by a hawk and the chicks were only three more days until hatch.

But I would never borrow an incubator, would not want my chicks to get into all the alien germs stemming from all kinds of poultry eggs, that might still reside in the crevices.

Good morning everyone!

Today it is overcast and our eyes can rest from the blindingly bright sunshine of the last week. Temperatures are expected to rise and another load of snow is expected.
I have had enough though, my shoulders don't enjoy all the shovelling that goes with it.:barnie

A fresh pot of coffee is on the counter for all of you sleepy heads, rise and shine!

We made it a year and a half without a dog. Princess actually missed having a dog more than me. Daughter stepped up and said, "You guys need a dog. If anything happens to you, I'll take care of the dog." We now have Miss Maggie Mae. She has completely restructured my day. She fluctuates between being an absolute delight and a royal PITA. All in all she makes us laugh. @aart Maggie has the long straight poodle legs that Rascal had. She also has the poodle intelligence, attitude and energy level. She is WORK, but we are so glad that we got her.
Yeah, I don't have that kind f backup.

Wish you could post pics of her.
Is she a goldendoodle?

Don't you have like 5 beagles too @sourland ?
Where do they live?

But some years later I bought an incubator
Do you use it regularly now?
You have those beautiful birds, do you raise for show or....?

Same here and mine too!!
Tho the tendinitis is healing up.

Another 5 inches forecast tonight.
I am way behind keeping up with the snow moving.
Need to clear the other shed roof, tho it's bolstered pretty well.
There's good foot on half on the patio that should be removed before a thaw comes.
Will get the tractor back there.....once I lube it up and balance the auger housing.

Good morning, Cafe.
@aart yes Maggie Mae is a mutt = they call them golden doodles, but a mutt nevertheless. She is keeping me company playing with her favorite toy - an empty Gatorade bottle. The beagles are outdoor dogs and live in insulated kennels. The heated whelping box has been preempted by Scaredy Cat.

Yes, I do use it regularly as I need to have the chicks hatch separately in order to mark them according to their ancestry. But the next day they will all be put under the broodies, that hatch their batch of eggs simultaneously.

I don't show my birds as I raise them organically and will not have them cooped up in these small cages and unsanitary conditions for days next to sick or otherwise unhealthy birds.
Birds that enter shows will be fed whatever by whomsoever and they fill their little water cups with nasty antibiotic stuff, that does not even help the enormous spread of mostly deadly diseases.
Some breeder friends of mine that show their birds had to cull almost all their birds after bringing back home the show birds that contracted nasty diseases while on show.

They changed their routine by selling all the shown birds right there at the end of the Show still on the premises or even cull them then and there, just to not repeat the devastating experiences they had.

But sometimes I do sell hatching eggs or some of my breeding stock to other breeders or people that can provide the acreage and right attitude to be entrusted. :old

Frozen shoulders on and off here, but the main reason are acromion calcar that will eagerly scratch and scrape at my tendons whenever I perform the 'wrong' move. 🤪

Well, just the little pleasures of every day life.

Really you do not want one ever? Why Please
I like things as natural as possible. For me, all the joy in chicks now is watching the hens incubate and raise them.
