BYC Café

Good morning Cafè and thanks for the coffee, George.
I got a headstart on filling the garden beds. The soil is wet, sticky and heavy and I am being conservative to protect my back so it's taking a long time.
And I'm being distracted by peepers.

That little Barnevelder near them is one half of the blister sisters. They are mean little hens! She'd already gone after mom before the chicks hatched. She did give a chick a few curious pecks before mom took them behind the run.

Good Morning

I woke up before 4am this morning, had 1 tea, 1 coffee and am getting another tea now. I have been doing so much stuff in the kitchen and still it is not half done, how can there be so much work?

Yesterday I saw online..Gumtree equivalent to Craigslist in the US. It advertised Pure breed Belgium D'Uccle cockerels, it says it is a bantam and I am so so crazy wanting to get just 1 for my flock & for me😄...I miss and miss so much having a rooster in my flock.

I did some searches online about this breed to find out how big it gets at maturity, there are conflicting information about how much this bird weight. Also some youtube videos say that it crows often, more often than standard size rooster and it is loud.......

Anyone here has a Belgium D'Uccle rooster in their flock that can please help me with this information? How big it grown into and how loud?

Have a lovely day everyone.☀️

Among lots of other fowl, our late neighbour kept 19 bantam roosters, several among them were D'Uccles and they were quite competitive crowing almost all day long ( nights too) extremely loud and shrill.

We were so relieved when over the years one after the other was taken by predators or died on their own and the neighbour finally saw reason and kept a few standard sized roosters.

Although Belgian D'Uccles are very cute, I do not recommend them.

Because they are too loud compare to the standard size? Please do tell me more about this breed.

Edit to say I do not have a rooster in my flock now and crowing excessively will not be tolerated by my neighbours.

Yes, their crows were very loud and shrill (ear piercing) compared to other breeds.

I am used to several of my own roosters of different breeds crowing, guinea fowl screeching, dogs barking etc.

And one other important aspect to take into account: their beards, muffs and feathered feet do need quite a lot of extra care.
