BYC Café

Good morning Cafè. Coffee is ready.

I ended up leaving the flock locked in the run this morning. None of them were down from the roosts when I went out to feed them. I could hear chattering coming from the woods behind the run. It sounded like a raccoon to me. So I kept watching and lo and behold a baby raccoon climbed up a small tree and got on top of one of the box trucks that's stored out there. It sounded very distressed so I think it's either lost its mother or is just lost in general. It was only about 30 or 40 ft from the corner of the run. I know I've got the electric fence but why take chances when I don't have to.
My only real concern is that The Fab 4 are now forced to enter into the flock to get food and water. When I was walking back from doing a fence check, one of them was sitting in the food bowl. And the other three were running around with their necks extended to max and getting the heck out of the way of any bird that came remotely close to them. So I think they're going to do just fine. Everybody is ignoring them.

Lots of wildlife encounters for me today! When I left to go run the dogs I could see a deer across the road on the widow's property. And then I saw a fawn pop out from the woods behind her. Oh how cute! Then I saw a second fawn pop out from the woods behind her! They started to cross the road. Heading straight towards my electric fence. Mom just stood there, still in the lawn, watching her fawns cross the road. One of them got to within two feet of the electric fence. That is when I decided to intervene and scare the snot out of them so they turned around and ran back into the woods after their mother. I cannot handle another horrible incident with a deer in my fence.
Then once I got down to the fields to run the dogs where the grass is armpit high, I could see the ears of a doe in the deep grass. She was just walking along and had not noticed me or the dogs. So I started yelling and clapping my hands overhead as we started to walk forward because I know that particular doe also has a fawn.
