Hey good morning Cafe, made these Pepperidge Farm pastry.

I euthanized 1 hen last month of reproductive illness and now ....more ill health...this is the part I hate about having chickens....diagnoses, guess work, possibilities, treatment,might be better or deciding to euthanize or not to euthanize.

It's never fun. The incidents of having to deal with these things increases with their age.

My near 8 year olds (hatch day 04/29/2018) are all doing quite well. Astrid, the gal who has now given me 2 eggs, has been sleeping in the nest boxes lately. This is not because of illness but for avoidance of the boys. She's had enough of them. I had a nice long talk with her about it this morning. I explained to her that this is the consequence of her having to hatch out all those chicks.

Here's my contractor question, starting with backstory.

The president (Dave) of our bee club is a licensed builder. He did a presentation on doing "cut outs." People call him to get the bees that have made a hive in a wall. He had a slide show of some of his projects, and the before and after pictures were impressive.

So, we thought he might be a possibility for our wrap-around porch. I talked to him at the last bee club meeting. I told him that his work on the cut outs was impressive and would call him. He said he was going on vacation, would be back the end of March. He texted me a couple days ago that he got my message and would be in touch after he got back home.

We wanted to get three quotes. I looked up several places... and looked up Dave. Wish I hadn't talked to him already. Only two reviews. Both one star, scathing remarks.

My question is... should I even ask him about the two reviews? Ask him anything...? look for any more information? Is there anything I could look for specifically? Ask for references? Hope he forgets to call me and we line up someone else?

We thought maybe we'd just get the other two (or three) quotes and tell him we're going with someone else. By text, probably, because I do NOT like confrontation. (Neither does hubby.)

I don't want to piss him off, because I still want to go to the bee club meetings.

I would just say that you went with somebody else because you really liked his work and you hit it off as soon as you met him. You didn't feel that there was any need to bother Dave and impose on his time when he seems to be so busy with the bees as well as construction work. Or however you want to smooth his feathers if they get ruffled.

We also lost an older hen. My flock is thinning down.
I did plant some seeds in the greenhouse and I hope they will be okay in there. The screen door needs to go on tomorrow so the temps will be tolerable.

I imagine Astrid thinking........have to shut down this broody business..

Reading your post about Astrid in hiding from the roosters...I am thinking hoping that might be my Basil weak leg is due to the tiny frizzle rooster and not any serious ill health. He only get to spend about 1 - 2 hours a day with the hens, most of the time he is by himself, he only get to them when I let him into their areas. My hens do not like my cute tiny frizzle rooster at all...he is not the material they would pick for themselves.

It is hard so hard when dealing with chicken ill health, Basil is about 2.5 years of age so she is not old, I don't have elderly chickens in my flock, they all die before their time so whenever one gets sick, I have that dreadful feeling of the world is crushing down.

Basil is molting and I had a molting hen that die at the end of her molting. Started with a crop that would not emptied, then she can no longer stand up, after she passed away I open her up and there was no blood, no eggs, but a massive liver with a healthy looking colour, and a large slap of fat at the end of her tummy, and fat covered her gizzard completely.

Basil is the same...her leg give way less I think, she is still eating/active, but crop is slow to empty. I just hope no serious ill health.

Good Morning,
1st coffee is here, 8am and 1st coffee is very late for me.
Last night the tv was having so many good movies that I love, I watched all of them together that is switching channel in between

No matter how many times I watch the movie Ace Ventura I still laugh to my stomach ache. I have not seen Jim Carrey in any new movie for many years.

I have 8 molting hens and 2 sicks hens....I got all sort of medications and a frustrated tiny rooster. He is a year old now, a mature tiny cutie rooster, I adore him and my hens do not like him.......the rooster is for me so it seems

We had a gorgeous day! We both worked on outdoor projects. We're both tired and sore, but it's a good tired and sore. I think I'll sleep well tonight.
