BYC Chat - Saying Goodbye to an old friend

I'm new to chicken keeping and I cannot tell you how many times this site has saved me and given me a sense of relief over so many things. I literally don't think I could have done it without you guys and support anything you need to do to keep this site up and running. If I've not said it before......thank you, thank you Karen

I have never used chat and have made some pretty good friends by just using the forum. It's not like chat leaving is the end of BYC! We can still all talk to each other on the forum.

There are some people that liked the instant interaction better then using the forum. There are a few chat people that dont have any posts in the forums.

Actually, that was part of what was negative, even scary, about chat, the ones in chat who never participated in the forum at all. We try to protect our younger members from being contacted with people who do not have good intentions. The world we live in makes us have to be extra cautious. Wishing everyone was open and honest and did not misrepresent who they are doesn't make it so or change the facts and chat rooms can be dangerous places for minors. There have been pervs posing as kids in chat, which should scare everyone.

I can't say I'm a bit sorry. I went into chat once a couple of years ago.....I could quickly see that it was not my cup of tea at all. I can see where it would be a nightmare to moderate....and you're right Cyn, people who only participated in chat and not the forum would worry me.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to the creators/staff/moderators of BYC. I have learned more from this single website about chickens than I have learned through any other info sources combined. Period. And I do not have to pay a dime. Another wonderful thing, I have never been "pushed" to become a paying member. People come here to learn, to ask questions, to strike up kinship with other chicken owners and learn about the animals we so love. I personally do not need a chat room to enjoy the site and I am just eternally grateful that this site is available at all. Again, thank you.

ok this is getting a little harsh.....
suddenly someone who does not post but chats is creepy?
what about all that post but never chat?
Honestly folk please stop bashing those who like instant interaction rather then bulletin boards (forums)
So far we have been called minuscule, creepy, even dumb because "why complain when you can use facebook/msn/yahoo etc"
I like chat, I like the forums, I DON'T want to exchange my personal emails or identifications just to meet new people who like chickens and critters.
I did like meeting people who have the same interest that I might never have met in the forums.
I know many who read the info here and chat but never post, I know many who post but never chat, heck I even know people who read info here but never post OR chat! go figure?!

Old Friend. I solved many problems on there! There was this one dude, Kargo, who on chat would just stay there 24/7 (I think) And not say a word

Who is he? A secret Moderator 4 Chat?!?

How is it harsh to say that pedophiles use chat rooms to troll for victims? That is not "bashing". That is the world we live in.

I think it's harsh to criticize Nifty because he is out to protect our young members. That is something none of the staff needs to apologize for, in my opinion.


BTW, I said numbers/percentage of our total membership that were using chat were miniscule--that is not denigrating anyone personally so let's pull back a bit about that, shall we? And I never used the word "creepy" at all.

To remove Chat was a group decision with Nifty having the final say. Naturally, we knew that some would be angry or disappointed, but in the end, what is right for Backyard Chickens was the deciding factor and life will go on, I'm sure.

As fast as some of these threads gallop along, I can't imagine missing chat at all. Theres Random Ramblings for all that. You can post on a forum just as fast as on a chat.
