Kimberly, known to BYC members as FlyingNunFarm, has been a member of our community since May, 2015. She will most often be found on the Official Squatch Watchers thread, talking with friends.

    1. Tell us a bit more about yourself. (Family, hobbies, whatever personal stuff you feel like sharing)

My name is Kimberly or as I'm often referred to, Nunny. You can find me most of the time over with the Official Squatch Watchers. I currently have 19 chickens of all ages, breeds and sizes on just over an acre. With my two dogs and three cats. Yes more chickens are on the way.

    2. Why and when did you start keeping chickens?

I am an accidental chicken keeper. I had an empty coop and someone had extra girls. I was asked if I wanted to try my hand at chicken keeping. That was a Tuesday, my first four girls came home that Thursday. I took a crash course in chicken care and have been learning ever since.

    3. Which aspect(s) of chicken keeping do you enjoy the most?

I don't know if there are parts I enjoy more then others. I love their individual personalities. Of course the eggs are wonderful and I have strived for a colorful egg basket.

All the way from PeeWee to Jumbo sizes, just like the chickens. I can say without a doubt that loss is the worst part. It is never easy for me.

    4. Which members of your flock, past and present, stand out for you and why?

I have had and do have some great birds. My first girls will always be special. They inspired my name. After my first four girls come home word got out and I was asked to take two more. Telling a non chicken friend about how I was apparently a home for wayward girls she asked if that made them nuns. I joked they were Flying Nuns and it stuck. My little Svart Hona Bantam Cochin cross is Lila Broody Queen. She is one seriously determined momma. She would brood a bump on a log and somehow make a chick.

One of her hatchlings is Pat. So named because there was a gender debate until 6 months old when he um... crowed...

Clayton my Porcelain D'Uccle has me wrapped around his tiny wattles. He is just the sweetest little fella. Always looking out for the girls but happy to get some attention from me.

    5. What was the funniest (chicken related) thing(s) that happened to you in your years as chicken owner?

I guess that depends on your definition of funny. I've been pooped on more times then I can count. I put an egg in my pocket only to break it and have a soggy leg. The wind once slammed the door shut so hard I thought I was going to have to crawl out the chicken pop door to get free.

    6. Beside chickens, what other pets do you keep?

I have three indoor cats. All rescued when they showed up at my door. Two dogs also roam the house. A Chihuahua who thought he was a cat until land was available to run on. Then he decided he was a farm dog. My Australian Cattle Dog has more energy then all the rest of us combined and likes to test me every day.

    7. Anything you'd like to add?

I joined BYC to learn. I have found great information that has saved my birds lives but also my sanity. Having such a wonderful community of people to turn to when times are hard or to laugh with when times are good has been such a godsend.
