Jaime, known to BYC members as MillersFarm, has been a member of our community since June, 2016. Another of our wonderful all rounders, she is known for her beautiful photos of her flock and farm.

1. Tell us a bit more about yourself.

My name is Jaime Miller, I'm from a large family of 9. I have 3 wonderful brothers and 3 beautiful sisters and a very loving partner who i've been with for almost an entire year, this Saturday will be our 1 year anniversary~ :)
I work at a local arbiter and would one day love to have my own business as a butcher.
When i'm not busy with school or my job i will normally go out horseback riding with friends, Do some gardening, fishing, hunting, or do some wood carving~
I also love photography :)

2. Why and when did you start keeping chickens?

I've had chickens all my life but never got into raising them until i was about 9. I really just love the idea of waking up and going out to feed and take care of my birds and watch them all free rang around the yard. It's fun to watch them do their own little thing early in the morning when they're all let out.

3. Which aspect(s) of chicken keeping do you enjoy the most?

Watching them grow from chick to a fully grown bird. That and the eggs :D
I'm also a bit of a hoarder and try to keep as many different varieties of colors in my flock ;)

4. Which members of your flock, past and present, stand out for you and why?

Dorthy, my broad breasted bronze hen, Is an absolute doll~! She is my very first turkey, and the friendliest bird i've ever known, I honestly think she thinks she a goat. She loves spending time with our goats then her actual turkey friends..

Then there was Hiccup, who had to be put down a few years ago.
She was the man reason why i really got into raising ducks, I had a few khaki campbells before i had her and her brother, But never really liked them. Hiccup had a very deformed foot and could not get around much when we took her in, She was also very beaten up since she was kept with mostly drakes. Hiccup had so much personality, She was always very curious with what i was doing and followed me everywhere i went despite her stump of a leg. She lived a good long life here at our farm but sadly had to be put down. She's still always be my favorite duck :)

5. What was the funniest (chicken related) thing(s) that happened to you in your years as chicken owner?

Oddly enough, I don't have any funny chicken related stories.. but I do have plenty of guinea stories!
I had just gotten into keeping guineas and had bought 12 adult guineas to add to my 4 originals. I was keeping them separate in a shed i had converted into a coop for them. It was about two winters ago, I was trying to get the ice out of their waterer one day when one of the guineas decided to fly out and up into a tree as i was doing so. It was snowing pretty hard and i didn't want to leave him out in the snow all morning so i went and got a net and a ladder and tried shooing him out from the tree and back into the shed. Instead the guinea thought it'd be a good idea to fly onto the barn roof. My ladder wasn't long enough to reach the top of the roof so i started throwing snowballs at him in hopes that he would fly down. But clearly he had other plans and flew all the way over on top of our house, Right outside the window of my brother's old room. And that's when i had the brilliant idea of going into my house, Carefully opening the window enough so that he'd he able to crawl through, and not spook him, And ran back outside to throw some more snowballs at him until he finally crawled threw the window into the bedroom. I somehow managed to close the window before he could fly out if it and threw a blanket over him and put him away after that. I made sure to clip all their wings afterwards.

It took about 2 hours to actually catch him so i didn't really find it funny at the time.

6. Beside chickens, what other pets do you keep?

I have a pied ball python, 2 Jack russell terriers, 1 Bernese mountain dog, 7 barn cats, 6 pigs, 2 jersey cows, 2 horses, 3 dwarfs and 1 fainting goat, Turkeys, guineas, Pheasants, Ducks, and Geese!
