Luke Sevasa, known to BYC members as servpolice, has been a member of our community since October 2013. He will most often be found in the Geese section, sharing his knowledge and beautiful flock of geese.

    1. Tell us a bit more about yourself.

I'm a 23 year old university student from Ireland but originally from the Netherlands. I started with geese when I was about 14 years old. My hobbies are photography and film work.

    2. Why and when did you start keeping geese?

I started with Embden geese since I was 14 when one year we forgot to slaughter our geese for Christmas. I bonded with them too much and decided to see what keeping geese was really like. Once they laid eggs they got goslings and our flock grew bigger which meant we didn't need to buy goslings ourselves. So we kept them from then on to hatch us goslings and eventually we got Chinese geese and from then on we saw how much character geese had.

    3. Which aspect(s) of goose keeping do you enjoy the most?

I always liked keeping geese to hatch as much mixed breed goslings as possible and see the turn out. Eventually I decided I would make money selling these goslings. Once my African geese stock grew I knew then that I wanted to only breed African geese (Buff variety in particular) since the breed is rare in Ireland.

    4. Which members of your flock, past and present, stand out for you and why?

In the past my passion for Chinese and Greylag geese was big until I found African geese for sale. I had 6 goose breeds and decided to make it 7 by buying nine African geese. The African geese by far had the best personality and character so straight away I fell in love with them. Now the Buff African geese are my favourite.

    5. What was the funniest (goose related) thing(s) that happened to you in your years as geese owner?

There was one year when my geese got excited flapping their wings in the field and flapped their way home but my Greylag crosses were still young and didn't know how to land so four of them flew a bit too high and flew over my house and over my large oak trees onto a football pitch when a football match was on. I raced to the front and I saw both football teams laughing herding them together and trying to catch them. The geese are only used to 1-5 people and not 30 people at the same time :'). The four geese got nervous and ran across the pitch away from the football players and flew back home because they heard the flock back home. Once they flew away everyone in the crowd and the football players started clapping

I've so many funny stories with geese but that was just one [IMG]

    6. Beside geese, what other pets do you keep?

I don't have many other pets but I've a German Shepherd and a boxer dog who are my flock protectors against predators. We've Guineafowl that alert everyone that predators are near by and are the most annoying but best alarm systems ever . We've a horse in the field grazing with the geese. I've chickens but am starting to get rid of them and keep two or three. I recently started with pheasants and Partridges.

    7. Anything you'd like to add?

Geese are by far one of the funniest animals I've seen. Before keeping geese I thought I never will get geese as I thought they were aggressive, loud and messy, but that's what first comes to mind when people see geese but people should understand that every goose has it's own personality and character no matter what breed.

I was one of those people and look geese are now one of my favourite animals and I would've regretted not getting them. Geese make life fun and keep you entertained and there is really nothing you have to do for them after they are adults besides a bit of food and predator protection [IMG]

I enjoyed reading about your experiences raising geese (especially the story about them landing on the football field!). The last picture in your interview of the dog and gosling is wonderful.
