BYC members in Massachusetts?

Americanas are more rare than you'd think- most hatcheries say that it is an americana (but they are actually easter eggers). Getting a true americana is hard- you can only get them from a breeder. Easter eggers lay colored eggs as well. Marans lay a dark chocolate colored egg. They are not known to be an overly affectionate breed but aren't mean either. Look into some of the breeds I said might be good. Also you can read reviews on all breeds here on BYC at: https://www.backyardchickens.com/products/category/chicken-breeds. If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Hatchery Marans will lay eggs that are much lighter than those pretty chocolate eggs you have seen in pictures. Some eggs may be darker than the standard brown but do not be surprised if they are not. You would have to find a breeder to get a super dark egg layer, and you would have to find a breeder to get a true Ameraucana. But for backyard flocks Easter Eggers (called Americanas as by hatcheries) are just fine. Since they are mixes they come in all sorts of colors and patterns, and will be easy to tell apart.

Dodge Grain is a great source for small numbers of chicks. They have no minimum.

Just a suggestion. Make sure you spell the breed correctly: Ameraucanas. Some "breeders" will sell Americanas, but are really selling Easter eggers. Ameraucanas are lovely birds. I have just two. Look for Paul Smith lines and you can't go wrong.

Anybody in mass know where I can get a couple of marans French/black?!?! Adult, chick, young I don't care--female only hopefully!
I just ordered from Dodge Grain in southern NH. They state they can get just about any breed. I'm not sure about adult birds. They were really nice and happy to talk to me and answer all of my questions.
