Hi all,

I'm a new chicken keeper with 5 backyard hens. We've got 3 that are 4 months old, and 2 that are 2 months old.

Inigo is a Black Australorp (so sweet and gentle)
Fezzik is a Light Brahma (she's in charge)
Vizzini is a Ameraucana (buff and blue, so pretty and so much personality)
Sparkle is an Iowa Blues (still getting to know this girl)
B.B. is a Buff Orpington (she's shy and docile)

Our 6 year-old son LOVES that we have chickens. He spends a lot of time just walking and talking with them in the garden. It's a pretty cool thing to see. :) My husband is still not sure about the whole business, but he's slowly coming around. I also love having these feathered friends in our backyard. They are a constant source of entertainment and we are all looking forward to getting some eggs soon! Hah.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sounds like you have a cute little flock, love the names!

Welcome to BYC! You have a very nice mix of breeds. Black Australorps are my favorite standard breed. As you said, they are sweet and gentle, and they are the best layers of the standard brown egg laying breeds. I have a six year old (will be seven late Aug.) granddaughter who loves our chickens as well. She names our hens after Disney Princesses, and has turned some of them into pets. :o) Good luck with your flock.

So glad you could join our community! Love the names of your birds! Sounds like you have such a lovely flock.

Make yourself at home and welcome to our roost!

somebody is a Princess Bride fan. I love that movie, saw it at the show when it first came out, and then about a zillion times on TV. You don't have a 'Princess Buttercup."

Okay, so maybe some of you could help me out...

Our older hens are past 20 weeks in age and we still have NO eggs. I have looked everywhere -- in the nest boxes, in the coop, in the run, and under every leaf in their fenced-in area of the garden. My husband was around chickens as a child and is convinced that they're making "laying" squawks, but there's nothing to be found. They are also VERY noisy. I've been told that hens aren't noisy unless they're unhappy and I can't figure it out -- they have constant supplies of balanced feed, fresh water, oyster shells, a comfy roost and coop, a nice and clean run, and unlimited access to a large area of garden to run and dig in.

Any suggestions?
