I did my own thing. The stuff that the archdiocese has is a new thing, I haven't even seen it!!!

I used some menonite stuff that I LOVED!
The two parishes I have access to are about an hour away each, so I will not be able to go there every Sunday once my Fiancé leaves. He is only here for the summer before he must return to where he lives out West. So, on the Sundays my father doesn't feel like going far, I am going to attend a Mennonite church just across the road. It's a lovely little church with a small congregation comprised of mostly older folks, with the exception of a 30's something pastor. I like that church decently. They're more traditional Mennonites, only singing out of hymnals and such. I have found Mennonites to be very agreeable. I made friends with a family of Hutterites who were also visiting on the first day I went there.
Do you mean just covering your head in church? More traditional/conservative women cover their heads before entering church, and some also cover their heads before praying at the icon corner.

Each congregation is different, some have zero head covering, some all women cover, and some parishes are a mix.

Also... different cultures tend to pick different styles of head covering.
Yes, in church and when praying is what I was asking about. I know the Jewish Orthodox tend to cover all of the time, but from my very scant understanding of their customs, they seem to be a bit more "Jewish" than "Orthodox". I don't presume to know anything of them, however.

The Greek Parish I visit tends to be anywhere from a mix to none, depending on who comes that day. The OCA parish has almost all covering, save one or two of the young girls who often forget theirs at home. I'm going to the Greek parish tomorrow, and intend to be covered.
Even within each of these parishes, the style of covering varies quite a bit, so I am more or less unconcerned. Just a bit nervous to be doing something so different than what I am used to, honestly! I know no one their will bat an eye.

My own understanding was that if you do not cover your head, the punishment was having your hair shorn.
1 Cor. 11:6 NKJV "For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered."
And NIV for plainer English. "For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head."
Having read it again in its entirety, it also seems to me that this particular verse is giving women some leeway, "if it is a disgrace".
@chickengr I suppose I could see how you came to your conclusion, though. Some of it also seems to say that it is alright to be uncovered and shorn if it isn't deemed shameful. I'm really not entirely sure.

most women here don't cover heads in church. I don't either. my hair usually is medium length. we might cover head in monasteries. some of them give aprons to women who wear trousers.

What do you do for the noon prayers?
I finally had a chance to super briefly look at the new pocket prayer book, and YES, it is set up differently, and I did not right off see the noon prayers.

Here is a photo of the noon prayers from my older edition. Super short.

I see!
This one has nine different prayers in two sections for "Meals" and "Through the Day".

Yes! Definitely different!

And the noon prayers in the old one is not the same as the "prayer of the sixth hour (12 noon)."

That is interesting, I would have guessed it would have been the same prayer.

But maybe the one in the old book is a prayer from the ninth hour, which I think is 3pm, since it mentions Christ on the Cross. :idunno

I do like the fact that the new edition mentions the differences that are said with/without a priest and when in regular verses feastal season. In the old version you simply had to know those things.

Yes, and there are additional notes in the beginning of the book about differences when a priest is present. A good little prayer book.

there are different opinions about covering hair. I remember Jesus said something like if women don't mind cutting their hair they should cover head. I tried to find that verse but couldn't. if so women with short hair can pray uncovered. that's how I understand that. I would like to hear other people's opinion.
I think St Paul is actually the one that talks about covering your hair. My Antiochian priest said to pick one and stick with it (be hot or cold, not lukewarm) but as I attend a ROCOR parish and that is what I was baptized I cover my hair now. In my previous parish I just wore it up always

I like that thought process, and that's how I more or less think of it. I've now even worn a covering to Protestant services, since I've decided to take it seriously and especially since I'm now actually engaged to an Orthodox man. It doesn't feel right to me to go back and forth. I'm going to live that life, even if it's a couple months out, the decision's been made and I've no need to wait!
