BYC SEWING/QUILTING CLUB

The quilt on the bottom... how easy is that to do?

I normally just do very simple quilts... so simple that my 7 year old made one just from watching me... I dont have a lot of confidence in my quilting abilities, but a friend of mine has recently asked me to make quilts for her whole family.

She has just put her mom in a nursing home and as they were going through mom house they found stashes and stashes of whole bolts of fabric, mom was an avid quilter. They found the HUGE rubbermaid totes FULL of pre cut squares 8X8. 10X10, and 12X12.. 1 box of each size... a sewing machine that hooks up to the computer and can embroider and whole shebang, various sizes of cutting wheels and mats.

she says I can have it ALL

IF I make quilts for her and her son, her brother his wife and his 2 girls she knows I am a basic sewer she says as long as they look good she is happy.. like not mixing john deer fabric with disney princesses...lol

I am really nervous about accepting this challenge/gift

but what I was thinking about doing is asking for members help... I was thinking about getting some matching colours/patterns together and sending them return postage paid to some BYC members, and assign a these like little girl, or teenage boy themes and then i can assemble them here when I get all of them back?
do you think that would lead to a lot of confusion, or is it not practical? she id not in any rush to have it complete i told her it could take me over a year to get all 5 quilts done and she was ok with that

If you are worried about postage, then bring it! haha. And I will help you get them done.

If she is not in a rush, I would go for it.

You can do quick simple log cabins, courthouse steps, etc and they will be done quick.

Thanks everyone! Both quilts were easy to do but the bottom one was super easy. It's easier if you use fat quarters because with a fat quarter you get the two 10 inch pieces to make your squares and your 2 1/2 inch strips for the edges. It makes up very fast. The pin wheel I'm working on now is going pretty fast also.

I answered before I read the post above re: how easy is the second quilt to do. I said in the first post you can use fat quarters but you can use other cut fabric as well. You wouldn't have any trouble with it. The big triangles are 10 inch squares, two sewn together in contrasting fabric and then cut down the middle making a square with two triangles. You cut strips 2 1/2" wide about 20: long and then sew them together so you have 12 strips making one piece 20 " long. Then you cut the strips cross ways so they look like piano keys 6 1/2"long. You sew the piano keys two together, making a strip 24 keys wide by 6 1/2 inches. One of these for the top and another for the bottom. You may need to remove one piece 2 1/2' so you have 23 keys across to allow for the corner pieces which are mitred. The side strips need to be 36 piano keys long. By looking at the picture you can pretty much see how it's put together. If you need me to explain how to do the corners, let me know. Lot's of luck!
