BYC's 13th Annual New Year's Day Hatch-Along - 2022

Pics
My first egg hatched at exactly midnight. How’s that for timing? It’s not entirely dry yet, but I don’t see a head spot (it’s from a LCN egg), so I think it’s a pullet. On wheaten down, though, I’m not super confident that I’ll be able to see a head spot; I’m not getting excited about that yet.

Still not so much as a cheep from the other eggs.

That’s great timing. My neighbors made sure I saw the new year in. Now that noise I can hear.

Fireworks? We have someone at a bit of a way off that does fireworks for everything. Our dogs make sure we don't miss them.

A second chick hatched and is keeping the maline company. Or putting him to sleep.

They are now in the brooder together waiting on buddies.

Yes M-80’s I believe.
Our dogs didn’t complain about the fireworks this time.

All fluffed up now. She’s not quite steady enough on her feet to go into the brooder, but she will be soon. No sign of life from the other three eggs. So…Do I make a TSC run this morning to see if they happen to have any chicks? If none of the others in this batch hatch, she’ll be alone for three weeks until my next group hatches. Decisions, decisions…

Depends on if you want that many chicks. Personally, I say GET THEM! 😂😂 Can you house the 4 if the other 3 hatch plus some TSC chicks? Maybe call and see what breeds they have and how old they are? I wouldn’t put 3 week old chicks in with a baby right away…

I would try to find her a couple buddies if you can if none hatch by tomorrow. Hatching right at midnight of the new year, is she going to get a special name?

Yes, I have plenty of room, and will have another hatch in three weeks (hopefully that one will go better than this one). I can usually mix ages in my brooder no problem, but I've never had a single chick involved, so I'm undecided about how I want to play this one out. For now, she's content sleeping in the incubator. If at least one of these other eggs would hurry up and pip, I'd feel a lot better. The clock is also ticking a bit on getting my next batch started, as it includes 7 shipped Bielefelder eggs that were collected last weekend. Nothing like a little excitement to start the new year!

I think her name is going to be Eve. :D
