BYC's 4th of July Star Spangled Hatch-Along

@LydiaB On closer inspection, I think the one egg must have a been a little dirty. Not really noticeable, but enough to cause a little mold growth, because the chick had actually stopped developing. In retrospect, I think the signs were there, but I didn't notice. And now too if I am a little more diligent with my candling at lockdown, I probably would have noticed a difference compared to the others, because the air cell was way too big. :/

Nine chicks!

I got a total of 10 ducklings and 10 chicks. The duckling that was upside down appears to be feeling much better. Time will tell. I think my humidity was possibly too high? They hatched sticky with albumen. It was only 55% though, but 80% for lockdown as I couldn’t get it to 75%. I opened up the dead eggs and some had even internally pipped… but died in spite of the safety holes. Probably shipping issues, but could also be too high humidity.

Here's mine outside for their first time. We ended up with one barnyard mix EE, and 4 black copper marans. Not a great hatch rate (I originally set 16 eggs). Shipped eggs, potentially a little old, because the seller took forever to fill my order. I think the incubator ran a little uneven in temperature. But I'm happy with what I got. I'm officially guessing: 2 boys and 3 girls.
