I confuse the daylights out of students with this, but the explanation goes much further:
Me: Chocolate is a salad.
Kids: Nuh-Uh!
Me: Of course it is. What are the three main ingredients?
Kids: (after a bit of thought) Cocoa, sugar and milk.
Me: Okay, Cocoa comes from a ... ?
Kids: Tree
Me: And a tree is a plant. Where does sugar come from?
Kids: Sugar cane
Me: And sugar cane is a ... ?
Kids:
Plant!
Me: And what is milk made of?
Kids:
COWS!
Me: No, milk comes FROM cows, it's not made of cows! What do cows use to make milk?
Kids: Grass. Hay, Grain?
Me: All plants! So, Chocolate is made from cocoa, sugar cane, hay, grass and grain ... Chocolate is a ... ?
Kids: (Usually shouting)
SALAD!
I've actually had students tell me, "I remember you. You're the Chocolate is a Salad Lady!" I've also been asked to explain the concept to their friends who don't believe them. It's fun being the "Cool Sub!"
