Bye bye hosta!!!!!

My hens have all at once started eating (stripping plants bare) plant leaves that they have never touched before.
hello @docjan ! welcome to BYC :frow My lot have suddenly chomped though a large japanese anemone that they never touched before, so it is not just yours doing this, and I too would be interested to hear if anyone has an explanation.

aren't rhubarb leaves toxic?

@Mvan42 my lot seem to want the vine weevil grubs usually found on my hosta roots. Do you have vine weevil there? And although it is tough on the plant, if you let them do it late in the season, it can actually help I think - at least, my hosta is a lot better since I got chickens - the evil weevil adults are nowhere to be seen! But I do have to protect it from the flock through spring and summer :D

I have never heard of them. So not sure. That hosts has been there about 14 years and is huge. I don’t think they will hurt it much. It just shocks me that they never touched it before and they were eating it like a kid in a candy store. Lol

Chickens can be very destructive in a yard. Last year mine ate through almost my entire garden patch. This year I moved them to their own yard, the only thing that is surviving the chickens is a wygelia plant, everything else is gone...:(
