Awwwww.....pretty hosta.
I would probably fenced it with something to protect it.
It might not be to late to do that. Sometimes the roots send up more sprouts the next year.
Beautiful yard and chickens by the way!

hello @docjan ! welcome to BYC My lot have suddenly chomped though a large japanese anemone that they never touched before, so it is not just yours doing this, and I too would be interested to hear if anyone has an explanation.

@Mvan42 my lot seem to want the vine weevil grubs usually found on my hosta roots. Do you have vine weevil there? And although it is tough on the plant, if you let them do it late in the season, it can actually help I think - at least, my hosta is a lot better since I got chickens - the evil weevil adults are nowhere to be seen! But I do have to protect it from the flock through spring and summer

I have never heard of them. So not sure. That hosts has been there about 14 years and is huge. I don’t think they will hurt it much. It just shocks me that they never touched it before and they were eating it like a kid in a candy store. Lol

Rhubarb leaves are indeed toxic. Keep an eye on your birds and make sure they're ok tomorrow.

You have to work hard to kill a hosta. I've had deer mow em down to the ground. Bigger and better next yr. I think you can toss one on blacktop and it will thrive, lol.

I doubt that hosta will be gone any time soon, unless they get at the shoots in the spring.

Chickens can be very destructive in a yard. Last year mine ate through almost my entire garden patch. This year I moved them to their own yard, the only thing that is surviving the chickens is a wygelia plant, everything else is gone...
