This is their first day at home. I made their brooder out of a cardboard box, a small dog food dish, and a waterer from the feed store. Oh, and I also have a light to keep them warm, and I put a baby gate on top to keep our dogs and cat from getting into their space.

These pictures were taken after one week. We named the RIR's Big Bertha, Corenelius, Grace. We named the Black Australorps Ellie and Cleopatra. We thought they were all hens. We thought they were Black Australorps.

Here they are at about 3 weeks. They grew so fast and ate so much, I quickly learned that the little dog food dish was going to be too small. So I got them a feeder.

I started to notice Big Bertha was different from the other two ladies (RIR's). Turns out, she is actually a Bert... a rooster. And the hens that I thought were Black Australorps are actually Barred Rocks!

Today, they played outside where their backyard coop/run will be. Here are some pictures of them at about 4/5 weeks. I think the RIR's are a week ahead of the Barred Rocks.

This is one of our dogs, Abby. If you look closely, you can see Bert, the little cockerel, perked up high. I think he is already learning to protect his hens.

This is the foundation I'm building for the backyard coop/run. I am still trying to get it perfectly level and square. My husband is a huge help. I think once we get the foundation set, then we can start framing and stuff.
