Should I go with McMurray or Cackle?

I've bought from. Both at different times and just find Cackles to be beyter. I got 3 very, very nice naked neck pullets last year. Murray McMurray is decent too, but I've notice they're smaller and abit more sloppy patternwise
I definitely notice the inconsistency. I always order 3 of each sex from them, and there is a lot in variance in quality. Thanks SO much for sharing your experience.

I’ve never ordered from McMurry but I’ve had very good luck with cackle. Mine are a year old and out of 18 I’ve only lost 1 and that was to predators. And If it was me I’d feel a lot better if I could pick them up considering the state of the postal service lately.

I'd be delighted to live close enough to pick up directly from either place! We've been very happy with our Cackle chicks, but haven't ordered any of the breeds you are interested in from either place.
And quality will vary from anyone; chicks from show breeders won't all be terrific either, it's about getting enough chicks to be able to choose the best ones.
Good luck!
Mary

Thanks for such a quick response. Also, I've read that the USPS is bogged down so maybe Cackle is the better option since I can drive an hour and pick them up there myself. It's my last year in 4H so I'm just really wanting good birds to show, though! I hope someone has some show experience with them so I can choose, lol. Beautiful turkey in your profile pic!
Sorry for the late response been out doin' chores. And thx not my turkey but he is rly pretty!

Hi, this is my first post!

I am in 4H (SW Missouri) and looking to show at a county fair. The standard is fairly low for birds there, and we have won reserve Best of Show with McMurray birds there.

I'm primarily looking for Salmon Faverolles, Red Shouldered Yokohamas, and Sumatras for show.

For a few reasons, we are considering ordering from Cackle (local pickup) instead of McMurray this year, which worries me. We had ordered from Cackle in 2012 but only a few birds looked correct. :(

What's your recent experience with 4H quality birds from Cackle? Did they show well? Should I just take the risk?
Where are you located.
I know a breeder in Texas who has great quality birds for great prices

I haven't ordered from McMurray. I've had good birds from Cackle, although I don't show I do enjoy learning about the SOP for various breeds.

My avatar is a Faverolles from Cackle. I have no experience with the other breeds you're looking for.

Right now I'd strongly suggest you order from the hatchery you can do local pickup. Any shipping can be impacted by delays, especially with COVID taking people out for weeks.

My experience is.....I don't show my birds...but i bought several exhibition type Rhode island reds from Cackle hatchery last year and they all are coming up nicely and mostly All show the standard...there starts my selection to improve the line. They all arrived at my towns post office at Puerto Rico the scheduled day and all were alive, they sent a couple extra chicks as bonus...lost 7 following that week but the detail is they all arrived chirping and walking. As for the refund of the dead chicks they sent back all 7 chicks. Those came the same way...at time And alive. Hope this helps
