cage hole??? help quick please

is there a way to know if a baby chick can slip through a cage hole? i have a cage that i want to turn into a brooder for 2 week old chicks the holes are about 1 x 1.5 can a chick fit through this size hole? I think I have heard if their head can go through then they can get their body through

Yep, they can. A chick is mostly fuzz and can go through chicken wire which is 1". In a couple weeks, they will be too big, though.

thanks for the quick reply, i guess i can reinforce the sides with cardboard for now and when they get bigger i can remove the cardboard, plus maybe the cardboard will help keep them warmer.. again thanks, didn't want anyone to get out and get hurt, it's a big garage out there.

They can get through there but you can rig up something a few inches tall to keep them in it until they can't fit through the slots. Hardware cloth would work but I have also used the plastic mesh like they pull yarn through to make bookmarks and stuff. They sell it in about any craft section at the big stores.
