Caged Hens Campaign

Oh, no, I didn't call you cruel. I said people who support it, EVEN WHEN they know that what they are supporting is a horrible, sad, terrible thing, are cruel.
Please PM me if you want to comment. I don't want to start a argument here. Thanks.

You already started the argument with your imflammatory inferrences about those of us the support the use of confinement operations as a tool to feed not only the people of the United States, but the world.

If every household had a few hens, and those who lived in apartments bought eggs from small farms who free range there would be no need to have a condensed battery type operation. As it is, no one does and 95% of the population is ignorant of their food source. Folks have been eating battery caged hens and eggs for decades and decades. Shucks, I'm sure you have too at some point in time. Those who live in glass houses........... and all that

Thanks, Lazy J.

And thank you, Boyd. I thought so, but wasn't sure. I just don't like being called names because I choose to have an opinion.

Im all for teaching people about where their food comes from, no doubt about that. A lot of people dont understand much of anything now when it comes to food. Im an Ag Major, Poultry Science to be exact, and you wouldnt believe some of the stuff I hear. I've eaten store bought eggs, and still do when my girls arent laying, ( like now, sorry little moochers

) and am happy to support the poultry industry. I've met many people in the poultry industry and they are amazing people with an enormous amount of knowledge when it comes to chickens, their care, diseases, etc. If every household had a few hens, it would definitely help and I agree, it would be better, but a lot of people could care less. There are people that are scared of birds, people that dont like animals at all, and some people that just do not want to deal with it. That's what the egg industry is there for. Those of us who have the chance to raise our own birds are the lucky ones, but I support the fact that the egg industry is able to feed those who dont have to chance to do what we can.

My exact point

Modern day folks for the most part do not care where their food comes from. And don't get me going on pre-packaged and pre-prepared foods (the devil) but I have always preferred to eat my own food. I always feel like an oddity pulling out jars of food that I've canned, or packages out of the freezer of foods that have been grown or raised here on my lil bit of land. Most folks are more worried about making their grass grow and how green it is and if it's at the proper height. I worry about moving things around so I'm not burning the soil with an accumulation of manure (sp?) and disease control with my animals, composting... and of course with all that I still go to the grocery store. Of all my friends, I am the greenest, but I don't feel like I am doing enough. I remember when I was younger that every day in the spring summer fall and winter we were working in the kitchen either putting up foods, cooking, freezing or preparing. Spring and summer time was our garden and foraging the ditches of all the overgrown country roads. It was also when we got our orders of hatchery chicks. Summertime was butchering of poultry, harvesting & replanting the garden, fall was butchering of other "grass" fed types

I'll keep that one on the quiet because many folks wouldn't like my carnivorous habits I'm afraid

Now a days most folks have a 2 income household, the 2.3 kids, one is a member of the PTA, the other takes little johnny to football, and fewer and fewer become stewards of the land and animals. Hey, I'm guilty here too!!!!!

Honestly, I support caged farms over cage-free.

LOL, that part in bold cracked me up. Im all about eating my own food as well. I raise a garden every year and am learning how to can my own food. I know plenty of people that arent worried at all about where their food comes from. I also know plenty that know where it comes from and choose to support our farmers because they'd rather not have to go through the hassle of raising their own food. I guess Im a little bit of both. I support the fact that our farmers are able to make a living by providing us with food if we cant or choose not to grow it, but I also am glad to know that I can raise my own. My mom for example, cant grow a plant. If she touches it, it dies. She's not allowed anywhere near my garden, lol. Without our farmers producing food to put in our stores, I would have died long ago!
