OH DEAR, I've had chickens for 30 plus years here and never had a case of well ... anything! I've looked it up, and it sure sounds like MD. Except none of them have any eye involvement, at least at this point. I'm going to call around tomorrow and find out if I can have a necropsy done, and in the mean time, I'm going to hope it is B-12 deficiency and I'm going to get a group that appears unaffected at this point, on vitamins.

These are my only young birds, thankfully.

I've never opted to have hatchery chicks vaccinated. And unless it is the right 'strain' of a vaccine for a virus, I don't think you get much protection. Like vaccinating for a cold...

Thank you all for such quick responses. I will update.

I vaccinate, and give my breeders a booster every year, ever since I started that I have not seen it in 5 years.

...and prior to vaccinating poultry, folks would put dirty turkey litter in with their chicks to give them immunity. The turkeys carry a strain that is similar but non lethal, it allows chickens to identify and form an immune response when exposed. The vaccine is basically the same, just killed or modified. Some people have had luck using Sambucol, which is a pr oven antiviral sold at drug stores for humans (works awesome on flu BTW) giving that, coupled w/ selenium (Brazil nuts broken up for them to eat) golden-seal capsules force fed and vitamin C in the water. Now I am not saying this to give you hope, but perhaps you could start the unaffected or mild case birds and save one or 2

All of these were bred from Mille Fleur parents, I believe 2 different pairs. I am working towards a bantam Calico line. Strange how one is B/W (almost Birchen) right?!?! Opinions? Thoughts??

I think Twig is pretty cute! Almost looks to be Silver laced? Or a cross with silver laced maybe? Please be sure to update as he ages, would love to see how he turns out. ANd just curious, what color was he as a chick?

Yeah - I am not sure what his color would be called! HAH!! Both of his parents were MF and I don't have a grasp on the genetics of things yet, so I don't understand!

He was born like this :

Freaky's comb is outrageously big for some reason. .. but I just love him. He's the only Cochin cockerel who has run of the farm currently. He hangs out with Ralph the cross-bred roo and the Buff Barred girls who aren't broody. Everyone looks so pretty together. I'm not breeding from this group (intentionally... but sometimes chicks happen) but I sure love watching them

Well, if you ever get a chick from Freaky- I still and probly always will want one. Max's comb is huge as well along with his wattles. I love Max. Max I put in with al my bantam Cochins. Rem is running my free range flock along with my head rooster Bruce, PB, and Roscoe. I may put one more Bantam pen together but most of my hens are to young to lay or broody so I'm not sure if it would be worth it.
