California chicken enthusiests.. where do you get your birds?

why is it in all the other states they have more breeds of chicken avalibal? Califrnia is bigger(smaller the Alska and Texis but still)

CABean? I don't know how close you are to SJ, but here's somebody selling Marans:

Doesn't say what color the eggs are on the Marans scale, so they may not be impressive, but who knows...

Here's another seller in West Marin, but he doesn't list what breeds he has:

HI EVERYBODY!!!

It's been really cool to see so many new people joining CA Chickens

. If I haven't welcomed you there, WELCOME!!!

Hope you guys find the breeds you're looking for. They're here in our state, if you look hard enough. It's just that many of the breeders are not on the forums that a lot of us frequent. ALSO, availability is often seasonal for breeders that don't hatch year-round.

I too am interested in the California Chickens Yahoo group and can't seem to find it.

My daughter would like more bantam buff brahmas. She is showing 4H. Last year our club bought chicks from a breeder via the mail, and we were happy with the quality, but it was heartbreaking when the first shipment was mishandled by the PO and they all died. I would much rather buy from a quality breeder in California and I'd be happy to drive to get them. There is another 4Her in our group looking for bantam light brahmas.

I agree, it's a bit difficult to find good birds in CA. You just have to keep searching, networking, etc. and hatching shipped eggs. Eventually you'll end up with what you want. Look at it this way, the search can be lots of fun because you have an excuse to go to shows and meet lots of great people! CA Chickens is a good group - lots of friendly folk.

Rosewynd, sorry I missed your question earlier and thanks for the compliment! That's Rusty la Roo. His momma is a Red Star and his daddy is a Silver Pheonix. He's not only gorgeous, he's also a super-sweety and the ladies love him! I can't wait until I can hatch some eggs from him crossed with my 2 EE girls - I'm hoping for gorgeous chickens that lay olive green eggs????

Hi All!

I'm on the Silicon Valley Yahoo group list and have really enjoyed the networking and information that is circulated there. This site is amazing! Between the two, I feel like I can get any question answered!

I'm NOT a breeder, but I have been bitten by the hatching bug.

I have no idea what my hatch rates will be, but right now I have broodies on black copper maran eggs, silver laced wyandotte eggs and golden laced cochin eggs. I can only keep a few, so the rest will be available. I absolutely can't keep any roos, so if you are looking for some breeding stock (these are all good bloodline birds), keep me in mind....

I have an order for 25 rare straight run mille fleur leghorns coming this summer from Sand Hill Preservation. I have been searching high and low for the mille fleur pattern in a reliable egg layer and ~ voila! ~ the bird of my dreams! I only want a few, so the rest will also be available.

I'll probably post on the yahoo group and Craig's List when the time comes. I'd love to stay connected to other Bay Area chicken enthusiasts. I'm in the process of planning a coop/run extension (for all those new chickies!), so I am very interested in other folks' set ups.

Take care and so pleased to see you all here!
