California Greys???

Here's the latest. Feed store called me when chicks arrived and I went and picked them up. One of the employees put a quart waterer in their box and a quarter of the box was soaked. Privett marked the cockerels for me. I kept them warm with the heater on in the truck until I got home. 2 out of 12 are weak so I gave each one a drop of Nutri-Drench, made sure they were eating and drinking. I'm still not sure whether they will liven up. Perhaps they will overcome the shipping stress. I use a teaspoon of sugar in a quart waterer and some Gro-Gel Plus on top of a bed of starter/grower. I'm on watch. Pics will be uploaded soon.

Upon opening shipping box. Hatched 3/20/13. Received 3/21/13.

Getting their first drink

Entering the nice warm brooder about to receive first feed.

The two pullets that were weak have perked back up and are eating and drinking well. Nutri-Drench is a favored product for that reason.

How exciting Michael! How are they doing now?? Did your two weak ones continue to rally? Are personalities developing? I am so happy to see cick pic. CA Grey chicks are hard to find pictures of on line. When does the barring start to show? I am getting black sex links and am concerned I may not be able to tell them apart at first.

They are 8 days now. I lost one cockerel today when I got home from work. I tried helping him recover but he was gasping so the risk of aspiration was high in order to try to give fluids. In little time the chick finally convulsed and died (flip over syndrome). I suspected fluid in the lungs/air sac. Just to be safe, I started Corid in the water and will do so at 5 day intervals with a preventative dose. The two runts recovered and are quite active like the rest. Some are almost black with light yellow highlights and some are very grey with the same highlights. They have noticeable barring around three weeks of age, so they look much different than a black sex link. Only the second week and they prefer the temperature around 85 degrees. I put them on shavings at 5 days old and was really annoyed at America's Choice shavings. They were very dusty. I returned them and just bought the larger flake.

I have a 3 week old California Grey pullet that I recieved when I grabbed my RSLs (Local feed store ordered a ton of them for some reason. I guess leghorns got boring). She's a little flighty, but she's calmer then the leghorns I have had in the past. She's also far prettier!

LeBlackbird howdy! I am getting 5 pullets at the end of this month. Not sure how many I am keeping but am excited about getting them. Expect they will be more flighty than what I am used to but I am OK with that. I like the lap chicken but don't mind the independent ones either.

Michael sorry you lost one of your boys. How many cockerels do you have left? Keep us updated on the health of everyone else.

Thank you, Tommysgirl. It's great when you can help them recover and sad when you can't. I may have 2 left. I originally posted there were 12 chicks. That was ordered but I did receive 14 CA Grey chicks. I'll know for sure in another week or so as to how many cockerels there are. I've never used Corid in the water before 3 weeks in the past. I'll keep the thread updated about their health.

She's certainly not shy at all, in fact she's very smart and quite obnoxious  she learned quite quickly that opening the brooder meant food or treats, so her and her little miscreant buckeye friend have made a habit of charging full speed at the side of the brooder and taking flying leaps into the air whenever I have my hand on the latch to the top! She's such a speedy little bugger. Will snap some pics when I have time! :)

Yes. They are known to be good flyers but much calmer due to the BR genes. They lay a white egg of good size.
