Hi Kim,

Congratulations

Great looking Chicks.

My first batch of hatching eggs did not make it. The two that made it to lock down were late quitters. I picked up 12 eggs from the feed store in Elvirta, 4 Marans and 8 Easter Eggers. They cost me a dollar each and I did not have to pay for shipping. The instructions on the Hovabator Genesis says to trust it's digital thermostat over other thermometers, but all indications are that it was too hot. I adjusted it down one toggle(it uses dip switches and is digital). The thermometers say 99 to 100 for one and 100.5 for another. This should be pretty close to where it is supposed to be.

I hope some of these hatch

Hi bigb-71

I have friends in Grass Valley. It's so nice there.

Ron, I thought that you had 2 hatch out of that last batch. I'm sorry it didn't work out. I'm sure that you'll have better luck with these eggs. Especially with EE. They are so hardy.
My friend who incubated these eggs for me has a Hovabator. She says that she learns something new to do next time, each time that she uses it.

Have a great day, everyone! I had another calf born last evening. Calves, piglets, chicks... it's like Spring around here!

Yes! That's the great thing about living in California--we can have babies all year.

I wish I had found the feed store in Elverta sooner then I could have practiced on cheaper eggs. Funny thing is a lady from church wants some or all of these chicks. Her husband had knee surgery a couple of weeks ago and he needs a project. He is a carpenter so the coop should be nice. Oh yea, she wants the eggs. Of course I may want to keep one or two for my self. Maybe I will sell her one of my Golden Comets...I am only supposed to have six hens here and I have eleven now. I think I can hide fifteen though

Here are the calves. They are Dexters. The heifer was born 19 days ago and the bull calf was born as big as she is. He will be steered and sold, in case either of you would really like to taste it.

You only need a half acre to raise a Dexter and they do fine on grass only.
