happy new years morning!

just curious, how long would you folks keep a new rooster in his coop/run (with his lady friends) before letting the gang out to free-range? will he know it's home after only one day of being "cooped," or should i keep them all indoors for a few more?
I think you will be fine. He will see where the girls go and follow them in. After a few days he will probably take the lead.

He should be fine now. He will follow the girls home.

Are there any Buff Orp breeders on here, or know anyone locally that breeds them? I got an email from someone looking for buff girls and she has two buff boys she is looking to re-home. I don't breed buffs. f you breed buffs, please PM and I will send you her contact info.

Happy New Year. I hope everyone has a happy, healthy and prosperous 2013!!!!

I am not suprised I have all of those guys here. The runs I am building are similar to what I have here. Really just need to worry about Air predators but I am thinking of putting up heavy duty netting like Kelly has.

i don't think there are many parts of CA that *don't* have those -- there were plenty of raccoons and opossums hanging around when i lived in SF and Oakland...

Please build it like Fort Knox, there are weasels up there too - and they are the worst for getting through fencing. Its awful to loose chickens to predators, and they are all around you now... If you have a good guard dog that sleeps outside it will help. Once they are chased off they are more cautious about coming back.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!

I hear ya. It is actually more woodsy where I am now. I think I will proof it.

Happy New Year to all! COOPER12, I bought the netting for my pen from Cutler Pheasant and Poultry supplies. I know the pheasant breeders use it so if it's good enought for them. Does anyone here use it? Right now mine are in a smaller area of their pen that is about 10' x 40' so I just have shade cloth and tarps. When the weather gets better I will put up to cover the whole pen that is pie shape and 50' at the widest and 150' long.
