California - Northern

Western Farm is awesome -- ask to speak to JP, he's the chicken expert -- their on-line schedule doesn't show having chicks til March, but they often have started birds for sale if you just drop by. other places to get chicks in the north bay include:
Mill Valley Chickens: http://www.millvalleychickens.com/chickens-for-sale.html
Napa Backyard Chickens: http://www.napabackyardchickens.com/available-large-fowl-chicks.html
and of course our very own Just Struttin' Farm -- breeder Deann is on this BYC list, and she can probably tell you when she might have chicks available again: http://www.juststruttinfarm.com/for-sale.html
aaaahhhh thanks......

welcome HippiAiti! i lived in oakland for many years before moving up here to Sonoma Co -- but only recently got into keeping chickens, so can't be of much help in that department. but more news from here -- i took my camera down to the coop to snap a picture of Max guarding the would-be layer, Jane -- here they are: and look! it's egg #2, still warm! a little smaller than the first one and less shiny -- but wow, never any eggs before and then suddenly two in one day! and I'm SO pleased that Max is such a gentleman -- surprised he's not handing out cigars!
That is so exciting... He loves his girls. Congratulaions!

got another crele egg. One of the hens is on fire.:cd

That wonderful Jason, my Norwegian started laying the same day as your girls. They have been giving me one a day

I put some in the incubator yesterday.. I know they are pullet eggs. I thought I'd try anyway. Oh ya, it looks like my isbar eggs are fertile. Happy Dance!
You need to set all those eggs your getting before you move. We you move they will stop laying again...

So frustrating...

I sent PMs to those of you that asked about the Azure Standard delivery in Redding. If I missed anyone, please drop me a note!

I did not mean to hop in and then disappear so quickly. For some reason, I am not getting notifications from BYC, even though I am properly subscribed to this thread!

Also saw that the Scratch & Peck feed is on the Azure Standard site now. $25.50 per 40# layer and $28.85 per 40# starter, both organic and soy- and corn-free!

687 pages since i left!! I wonder if ill be able to read it all lol

welcome back, Mike!

and i've got a random feed question for those of you more experienced with this than I: between my local feedstores, i seem to have a choice between getting "all natural" (but not organic) soy free layer feed, or organic feed that does contain soy -- any sense of how to choose? i can't seem to find organic non-soy, and am not sure which is more "important"?

thanks!

Thank You for doing this!

Remind me about the fish meal and where you get it. capayvalleychick is interested in getting a bag of it. papabrooder comes down this way regularly and I go up there too, so we could figure out how to get it to her.

Bye,

Non soy is the best way. If you can't find organic, look for natural that says non-gmo.

A little bit of soy is ok, but none of God's creatures should eat non fermented soy as their main protein source.

Next to worry about is GMO corn. Evil stuff and in almost everything we eat too.
