California - Northern

I hope that they stay off the freeway! That is an impressive sight. Especially that many males together.
You would love it out here... they are a common sight. You'll see a turkey hen with what looks like a zillion chicks trotting along behind her.
Happy Spring!

Yes, Capay Valley is on my list of Places to move to.

Yes, it's the first day of spring, so my Calendar says it's time to worm my chickens.

Does anyone know of a vet that does Fecal Float in the Woodland Davis area that is not too expensive?

We have in town wild turkey flocks in our area. I've seen them along the road in Antioch, Brentwood, and Concord. Monet just saw a flock along Hwy 4 last Saturday as we drove from Antioch to Brentwood. We have even had them come through our subdivision. One day, I looked out my kitchen window and they were at my neighbor's house, up on their roof! We have lots of suburban wildlife around here!

How cool! We have wild life in the form of coyotes, cougars, tons of rabbits, pheasant, and sage grouse (to name a few) but no turkeys (well no wild turkeys). Oh I did see a huge herd of antelope and supposedly we have prong horn sheep up here too. Never seen the sheep that are native to this area and I'm feeling very cheated!

I do have chickies hatching though!!! They are adorable!

There were a flock of wild turkeys today at the barn fussing at the horses......then I let my Standard Poodle out of the car, and they decided that perhaps horses were the least of their problems!

Concord Feed loves Back Yard Chickens! When I am in for any chicken stuff (which means often at this point) I am always told about the site. I think it may be on the sheet they hand out for those of us who are very new, as well.

Yes this is a great place to learn about chickens. Welcome to this thread too.

Please tell us your chicken story and if you have them now please post pictures when you get to 10 posts(Can't post them until then---you could use something like photo bucket)

Does anyone know a local source (within a few hours drive of Sacramento) for mandarin ducks and wood ducks? I'd love to get a pair of each. DH is coveting them since I showed him pictures.

Dang, we are horrible enablers to each other,

My example has always been if one of us would say, "Let;s get a pet wolverine", the other would say, "I think we should get two". I now refer to some pets (like the new WCB polish) as the wolverine chickens.

Hi California People
frow.gif
,
I'm right here north of Sacramento, near Rio Linda. One day I hope to buy a little "hobby farm" near Rio Linda or Elverta. As of right now, I'm the only one in my neighborhood that has chickens. And, that's only possible because of the zoning ordinance that states "your property must meet a minimum of 10,000 square feet...". We have 10,019 sf...LOL!

Right now I've got 3 hens: RIR, BO and a PBR. They have a coop and chicken yard, but I put them in a chicken tractor each day. I've wanted to let them free range during the day, but am fearful about the hawks attacking them. Does anyone know where I could buy poultry netting locally? I've seen it in Stromberg's for $133 (for 25' X 100'), but they want another $60 for shipping.

Or, does anyone have any other ideas to keep the chickens safe from hawks (besides keeping them in the tractor)?
