In a natural environment, the hens will lay in one box. When the number reaches 9 to 15 eggs, one of them will begin setting on the eggs. Does your Black Orp sleep in the nest box too?

I have a Hatchery RIR that growls at me when she is on the nest. It is cute but she has not gone broody. The two broodies started sleeping in the nest box, got a "look" to them and would not move when the other hens laid their eggs. The egg laying hen kind of skooched in, laid the egg and then the Broody moved it in with the fake eggs she was trying to hatch.

Put a bunch of fake eggs into the nest box. If she goes broody, wait until night time and switch the fake ones for fertile ones. To make sure she is broody, wait some time, like 5 days.

Good luck!

Thanks Ron, I was wondering if that would work.. I guess when my two new Silkies get out of quarantine and I get a silky rooster I will try that.... Silkibators!

Quote: With my two that went broody last Fall, It only took two fake eggs to get them to go Broody, an SG Dorking and an EO Basque Hen.

Good luck with the Broody hatching!

Thank you so much everyone! Today must be a big day. We have a downed duck...nasty bumblefoot we have to treat. Separate the chickens. Tall order!

I have to re-home the extra roosters- BUT we are possibly keeping 2 of them (and adding females. gotta love chicken math) so those 2 we could turn out with the little female. I don't even want to bother integrating the other cockerels if I am just re-homing them.

Foghorn (our banty roo) does a pretty good job keeping the peace. I want them in quarantine a little longer. Still making my way through our final decision. :D

Is there such a thing as pre-broody? My black Orp pullet has started to yell at us when we come into the coop lately. When she is in the lay box of course. She eventually lays her egg and leaves but the yelling is newer. She does not bite per se but if you get your hand close to her she does spank you with her head lol.

Is there a way to encourage a hen to GO broody? I need one asap. I have all these bantam eggs collected and a few EE eggs I want hatched.
Leave a bunch of fake eggs in the nest box and she may be tempted.

I am sorry to hear about the bumble foot.

Good luck with the chicken shuffling!

I think if you are going to re-home the other roos anyway - you will be able to keep your three keepers together without a problem. The two roos will determine who is boss, and the lady won't be mauled..

If you are going to the Stockton show you might put a notice on that thread that you have the Roos once you decide who to keep - and you might get some takers who are going to the show to pick them up? I am going down to get a partridge Silky roo for my girls and give away a Mille Fleur roo.

Hmmm good idea! Thanks!

Thanks! I am optimistic until it becomes otherwise.

Ack! I had bumblefoot on a quail.. That was a tough treat, they usually tell you to put them down, but it was bubbah. her foot stayed different then the other one, but she seems fine and its been 10 months now. but soaking a quail in salt water and wrapping her foot, yah she was not a fan never forgave me. She still growls at me when i clean her cage.

Those silkie roos should not be Roo like IMO for months. The ones I hatched in April after Easter... started mating 3 weeks ago. They are just slow pokes. I have a hen from March that still is not laying. If there is a dominant roo in the bunch they may never act like roos. just watch the little showgirl roo doesn't get aggressive.

My cream legbar girls have started laying again. But the eggs are HUGE. I thought they were ee egg because they were so big, but they were the wrong color. I saw one of the girls on the frigging egg today, and the other one getting out of the nest from the other egg, so I think its safe to say it is them and not mutant ee eggs. I am hopeful these eggs will be fertile since they are so much bigger and everyone is older.

Also, I have a question for you all. I was on the hatching egg/paypal chat thread and 2 girls who went to a lecture in Arkansas said the guy speaking said that is is always the last rooster that has mated with a hen that fertilizes the egg. As long as she is being mated by the desired roo, a "oops" wont matter. He apparently has some credentials. I'm trying to find a copy of the lecture, but has anyone else heard this? It would make breeding pens much easier!
