Ok, back to the mites question. So my jubilee orps look great. no issues. but i did find a BLRW with an eye swollen shut and a couple of chickens looking like this BLRW above. Is that due to mites? This one is by far the worst looking. Or is this just adolescence? I dusted the orps and the coop but didn't get to all the chickens mostly because of time. I can't find any evidence of eggs or anything. I haven't gotten any bites. All the pictures i have looked at there seems to be clear evidence of mites so I'm struggling to know if I should be going on a mite rampage...

Help?

Hi Jeff,

I would say mites. Your options are:

Dust them by shaking the poultry dust on them while you hold them. Make sure to get the dust around the vent.

Some use a plastic bag, put the dust into it and then put the chicken in up to the neck. You then shake them around like a shake and bake.

You can use a liquid to dip them.

I have read about using dog frontline. you put a drop on a cotton swab and dab it on the back of the head. The claim is that the forntline gets into the meat but not the eggs. I think you know superchemichal girl. She said something about the withdrawl being around 20 days.

You need to spray the coops with a good poison like seven or frontline spray. You need to repeat every two weeks to break the life cycle of the mites. I did not have to use the Dog frontline because the blue strips I told you about are in the coop and the mite problem went away quickly.

The mites and lice that the chickens get do not bite us. They only get the chickens, so you won't get bitten. You could get some on you at night. The ones you have are probably the ones that hide in the coop during the day and come out to feed at night. You won't see them on the chickens during the day. If you see them, it will be at night and they will be very tiny red to brown dots that move.

Sorry this is happening with your chickens. If you can find some time to treat thoroughly you can get rid of them. If not, they will keep coming back. Can you get your wife to help? It makes a big difference to have another person help with the shake and bake or dipping.

I will get a picture of the die no mite strips I am using tomorrow.

Good night,

Ron

Thanks! Where did you get the die no mite strips? I went to some website that was selling cases only. Not sure I need that many. :)

I put my under a broody, so I don't get to see any pipping, but I bet I could hear it if the roosters didn't crow,

good luck to you!

I am fine and happy it is Friday!

I am taking a quick break to check BYC and then it is time to move my two roosters that crow to the garage.

These guys don't crow yet:

This guy goes with me to get food and water:

Beautiful birds!!!!!

I am fine too & collected 9 or 10 Red Golden Pheasant chicks from my grown son's pheasant pen yesterday. My son is gone on the week ends so I was out making sure everyone was fed & found a dead chick in a pen next to the pheasants where I have an assortment of growing out chickens. I knew it wasn't a chicken so I went next door to check the pheasants who I knew had a clutch going. The chicks were scattered everywhere, even outside the pen & the Mom was just standing there doing nothing. I gathered them all up in my apron & took them in the house & put them in a brooder. We raised 4 last year from this pen.
I have several hens broody right now which is new to me. Nobody ever goes broody except the Silkies. There was one chick running around the Yokohama pen with 2 Mamas following it around. They left all ther est of the eggs. I was getting way to many eggs, the brooders were full so I didn't want to hatch anymore for now so I let anybody that wanted to set do just that so we will see. I will empty 2 brooders on Monday so maybe i will selectively hatch a few again.
It is starting to warm up & I hate the heat so I will hibernate during the days......LOL
