That's scary! Just when you least expect it, the rooster attacks! I used to help take care of a beautiful Polish roo and his girls. For some reason, he just didn't like me no matter what treats I brought. I know that he was just being protective and would get really agitated if a hen squawked when I moved her out of the nest box to collect eggs. I had to keep my eyes on him at all times because as soon as I turned to leave the pen, that's when he would come for me. I don't like those sneak attacks!

I went out to look at them--the ones with the white legs have the smallest combs. One that I separated out as a possible roo has white legs with yellow at the top. They all look like the one in the picture and none of them have the crele barring.

I refuse to believe I hatched out all pullets. The hatch rate was too good with these for that. Maybe Chiqita is correct!

Time for a picture and banding project tomorrow!

This bird has a very distinct comb which is throwing us all off, but the color is spot on pullet. Perhaps she is taking the roo roll, since you hatch all girls. LOL If you get a chance, post pictures of the others.

I also don't see any bloody poos in the brooder! I think that the Sulmet is working! Should I wait until treatment is over to give them probiotics?

The pro biotics should be fine. Like Dawg said about worming, don't give them treats for a week after treatment.

I would give them a half dose of corid for 5 days after this treatment is over. They need to build up resistance to coci.

I just am having a hard time thinking that they are all pullets. I have never done that before. There is always at least one roo, especially when I hatch 7 of 8 eggs....

My Hens are making that 'clucking' sound we call the egg song here. It might be 'can you believe the thing I did' sound. Either way I'm getting some more eggs!

While at 4-H yesterday I was asked what a de.spurred rooster looks like. I explained that roos will always have spurs. Snowman had just shed one of his so I could show what it would look like if she twisted the old spur off. He lost his other one the year before so she could also see how they grow back. She asked about blunting the spurs also. She was asking because her son was in the hospital recovering from surgery after being attacked by her roo. Her son was spurred under his knee cap and they had to go in surgically to try and get the infection under control. The rooster is a feed store EE she likes because he is big.

I won't deal with a nasty roo. When the BLRW where in the greenhouse collecting eggs was like reaching into a chest freezer while holding the lid up. If Dude had come after me I would have been defenseless and it would have been my face and head subject to attack. Would I ever ask anyone else to take that risk, Heck No! I wouldn't have done it if i didn't know him either, but therewere days when the risk crossed my mind when collecting eggs.

If any of them were excellent type, color etc. in a breeding pen, it would still be a tough call for me. I would hate to pass on aggression in the offspring. We tried to deal with a SS cock at the fair 3 yeats ago. He bloodied everyone who tried to feed him, adults and 1 kid. We had to call the owner and have him feed him because he was tearing us up, and it was not just the normal stress of unfarmilliar surroundings.

I have been preoccupied the past week in preparation of a big step for our family and haven't been on here nearly as much as usual. Last night we adopted two 2-year old male Persian cats. I know this is a chicken forum, but most of you here are animal lovers and have kitties of your own so wanted to ask your advice.

Neither of these boys has eaten, drank, or used the litter box since yesterday. One is obviously frightened, he walks low and hides a lot. The other is coming around, but shows no interest in food or the box when I show him. I have given some of the food the breeder sent me home with...except for her recipe of "raw" food she gives to them. I don't have the items to make the concoction and thought they would be fine with what food she did give me.

Does anyone here feed their cats raw meat? Do you think that they will, as I've been telling myself, eat what I have out when they are hungry enough?

If they have only been fed EXCLUSIVELY a raw diet, you might want to transition them with freeze dried raw feed ( petfood express has it, smells nasty however) And watch the water intake. cats naturally get their water intake from prey, in the wild they don't drink a lot if at all. I would feed them wet food for a while and then transition to dry if you are inclined to not feed raw. raw IS a huge PITA. Also make sure they are on no grain dry or wet, or watch for vomiting and allergies. Do you know why she was feeding them raw? just because or sever allergies?

Some cats will not understand kibble is food after a raw diet. Lhasa my older kitty was allergic to everything and we started her on raw, but in a tiny kitchen there was not space to make our own food and we went of when we got 3 cats. She was OK on wet and non grain cat food ( I can look up brands if your babies get itchy or throw up, PM me) and could sometimes eat rice or peas but no corn or grains besides rice. We tried to go back to a raw diet when we moved here, because cat food got expensive, But they would not eat things we raised on the property. They used to LOVE raw quail, but not when they watched it grow up! So strange.

If the level of the food and water bowl is not going down, break down and pour some tuna juice on it. Don't do this for very long if they are boys, tuna is mega bad for boy cats.

I'm sure capa knows more about all this then I do, I was only really mother to bottle babies and my own pets, I know she has done rescue more seriously and has probably seen every food issue in the book.

Also, I agree about keeping them in one room. and feliway! get some at the pet store, then get it on the internet, its 1/3 the price and worth using for a few months. It works wonders when they have change. Also Bach flower rescue remedy has a reputation of working great for cats. Its hippy dippy flower stuff, but I use it on my kitties, it seems to do something.

So it's day 7 for the incubaking eggs. I just candled & weighed everything.
The eggs from papa brooder are going great -
3 of the 4 speckled sussex are developing - yay!
All 3 of the mille fleur leghorns are developing - double yay!
..and the eggs I got from little ameraucana mom are also going great - 5 of 7 buckeyes and the one cochin are all developing - triple yay!
and the ten araucana eggs from my little black hen... not a whisper of development. Sadness.

I know the rooster is fertile - I've hatched a dozen mixed EE/araucana chicks from him. The hen has a partial tail and the rooster is fully rumpless. I'm thinking maybe the hen's partial tail is causing issues and preventing successful matings. Guess I'll have to do some tail trimming.

rumpless gene is lethal in some percentage of the cases, so I have heard you get very low fertility in rumpless to rumpless. I don't know about partial tail? but it is possible between winter issues and rumpless issues you could ahve 0% atm. I also remember something about rumpless roos having some issue, but I read about it almost a year ago so the memory is vague except for the memory of deciding to not test hatch those suckers!

Yes, the roosters will all join in on the "I'm upset" song. Fortunately most hens will wait until daylight to lay, so you won't have the chorus at night. If you DO hear that at night - get out to the chickens QUICK!


There is a different sound for a warning of something overhead. You might describe it as a growl or a whistling sound. Starts high and then drops low. If I make this sound the chickens all duck down, stop moving and look up. When I hear the roosters make this sound I look up, and there is usually a bird flying overhead somewhere.

Some birds have a different warning sound. My silkie rooster Owl makes what sounds like a hoot - its really funny.

Um, yes - I did spend quite a lot of time watching my chickens... OK - I will be nice to the nice young men in their clean white coats.. can I at least crow a few times before we leave?

I am unsure if I should hire a hit man or have all my eggs shipped to you.... You should keep good records this year, and see how improbable your luck really is.

What brand of organic are you finding for $14 a bag. All the organic I've seen have been around $30 a bag!
If you don't want to feed them the same as the breeder you need to slowly change their diet or you could really upset their bellies which are probably already upset from the move to their new homes. I would entice them with the diet they're use to under this stressful time and then slowly change them to your feed choice....especially if they've been on a raw diet. Maybe do some research or call the breeder for input on the healthiest way to switch them. They're beautiful BTW!

He gets it 2 tons at a time from a mill up there, and sells it in 85 gallon barrels. It is 20% ferments BEAUTIFULLY and is organic. He feeds it to his pigs and chickens and some other thing. very nice guy, but out in the middle of nowhere. usually Mario grabs it when he goes up that way for work, but nothing has been breaking in that office lately so we went up n our own when he got more in.He had a LOT of barrels let me tell you!

WOW, this is why you tip the mailpeople. We have fantastic ones here, except they don't pick UP the mail. But they are so good with my eggs and packages I don't want to complain, so I just drop it in the nearest box.

My boys start at 4:30, they didn't crow this morning but I'm NOT going to load them into the van every night.

Mine usually start at 3:00 or 4:00a, once they crowed at 12:30a because the moon was so bright!
