It's a sad night in our chicken yard. Remember my penguin walking blue Langshan chicken Jewel? She's the one in my avatar. I had my DH put her down this evening. She took a turn for the worse this week and spent most of her time hiding from our head chicken and her enforcers. They were jumping on her every time they could and the back of her head had scabs from them pecking out her feathers. They must have known that things were not right with her. She also stopped laying eggs last week and was breathing with her mouth open. I think that she could have had liver problems or major problems with her egg equipment. The problems started within a week or 2 of her starting to lay. She was one of my favorites and it was a hard decision to make but it was for the best for her. RIP Jewel!

I am sorry, it seems its always the favorites that you loose. I know I hate making that decision, but you are right, it was the best for her. You are a good chicken momma.

Back in the USA now and it took forever to go through 10 days worth of posts this morning! ACK!!

Chickengirl1304....darn it just this am sold the olive eggers I had (only jubilee orps and mille fleur leghorns available now), but Sarah (mycutekitties) has lots of eggs available or she will hatch as well, I believe.

I'm getting Red Orpington chicks from Greenfire and 15+ Blue double laced barnevelder chicks from Fancy chicks this week!! (I'll have extra barnevelders avail in case someone "needs" them!)

At any rate, had a wonderful time at our home in Cabo, took out our sailing kayak and floated next to whales 50 yards away. It was an amazing experience.

This guy and his friends were waiting for the fishermen to come in and clean their fish!

We are avid whale watchers !!! Spend time several days a week watching from shore and will be boat watching in the spring. Pelicans are favorties! We dont get to visit with them up close but get to watch them feeding ( naturally , not from fishermen lol) when they are in the area. Thank you for sharing your amazing pictures! We had only one up close encoundter with a young whale in San Farncisco Bay when it just circled around and was swimming lazily around our boat. We turned off the engine and drifed for about 30 min with it right off the stern . They are just amazing!

Thank you everyone! I keep telling myself that it is silly to be upset but feelings just happen. She was part of the first group of chicks that I hatched and we chose her to stay in our layer flock with a hatchmate who has crippled feet. I have a soft spot for underdogs and Jewel was that. Plus, I nursed her inside for a couple of weeks hoping that I could make a difference and that makes for a strong bond. My DH thinks that my nursing is the kiss of death but I was able to nurse my OE back to health! I just wish that it had worked for Jewel.
No, not silly at all , well at least in MY opinion!!! I have formed that sort of bonds with some of mine through nursing them or special care. I have a lovely white silkie that though I have decided to sell off the rest of that color wont be going anywhere. I spent a lot of time nursing her back to health after a shipping accident.. she is now a permanent part of the family :) I mourn the passing of each one in its time and some way more than others .

Took more pictures today. These are my Partridge Polish Projects and the one below is a Silver Duckwing Phoenix X Crele Polish

All dressed up and no where to go!! These girls are fancy.... I can't wait for your trip to Tahoe so I can get my hatching eggs!!! Can't wait much longer!!
These are the orps. The blues are Smith Hobby Farms (yellow band) eggs and the Renies Peeps chick is the lone splash baby with the red bracelet on. Hope shes a girl!

I want to thank PetRock for sharing her Vent Gleet experience. I have two with it and one is pretty bad.

It was a weird experience treating with a suppository....

I am sorry PetRock. I stinks when our favorites go and no kidding if it seems as if they are the ones to go first. My favorite out of 12 was the only one that was in a scuffle with an Oppossum. She had to be put down. It made me very sad. I think most of us here completely understand how you feel.
