On another gross side note, meal worm colonies are down right creepy. They are bugs and I am voluntarily growing them, and I keep them IN my house because everywhere else was too cold. That is just not normal. Everytime I go check on them I ask myself WHY I am doing it? At first it was an experiment and because meal worms are expensive. But I keep looking at them and ewwwwwwwwww. How am I going to get the worms out of that mess to give to the chickens???? I don't really even see that many worms right now. I saw a literal ball of beetles in one drawer. One half pupated beetle walking around. Bleck! Makes my skin crawl!

. (Sorry went off on a self analysis tangent there.....you know one of those what is wrong with me tangents?)
I totally agree with you! I have one going but it is totally disgusting. Mine are in my garage, I have the pupae and worms in one bin and the super nasty beetles in another and it always seems that there are a million beetles and hardly any worms!! I don't even feed any worms to my chickens either. Ugh.

I thought of you first when I put them on the list of birds to find hatching eggs for, but I didn't know if you had gotten everything all set up yet :).

Okay you are on! I will take all the colors! lol Do you have pictures of the different colors of the adult birds? I only knew about the black ones until you just told me about the others.

I didn't do the numbers but your hatch went really well. I had 23 in lockdown and 15-16 hatched. The last one to hatch that had a leg issue finally died on Saturday. Did any of yours have curled toes? I had one that did and then it straightened on its own. I am trying to remember what it is that can cause toe, leg issues....? Temp too low? I will have to look it up.
We should have some of the breeding pens set up this weekend. We'll put the girls in them and give them a break from the boys for 3 weeks. I'm assuming we should have some fertile eggs in around 4 weeks. I will probably do a test hatch and then we'll have some eggs to sell. We only have a pair of the whites so we will have fewer of those eggs. We have at least 2 pullets of each of the other colors (blue black splash) and 2 roos of each color (one for breeding and the other as back up). The girls were good layers when they were here with me so I am anticipating lots of hatching eggs! I need to take some new pics of them. Langshans are a very slow maturing breed so they have grown and broadened since these pics were taken.

Our white pullet named Galadriel. She has a nice shape but tight feathering. She should make nice babies with our giant white roo, Gandalf!

These are our 2 splash pullets. The one in the back has lighter eyes so we may not breed her or just do one test round with her.

One of our blue pullets. We have 4 blue pullets that I need new pics of. This one has a higher tail set but didn't want to cooperate with me!

Two more young blue ladies!

One of our black pullets from rodriquezpoultry. She is even more beautiful now that she has matured.

This is Gandalf when he was younger and not filled in. He is our biggest roo and is a tank with a beautiful tail spread! He is going to make very nice babies!

They were young here but you can see how beefy Gandalf is compared to the splash girl.

This guy is gorgeous now that he has billed in and grown into his legs! He was so gangly that I thought that he would not make the cut for breeding. I was very pleasantly surprised when I saw him after he had been free ranging at the farm for a couple of months. We are planning on breeding him to our best black girls and hope to come up with some awesome blues! I'll try to take some new pics of him, the other roos, and the girls when we are at the farm on Sat.

I haven't noticed any leg/toe problems with the 19 bobwhites that we hatched. My incubator maintained temps really well but humidity not so much. Plus, I had them in their with my chicken eggs which went into lockdown 3 days before the quail did. I kept the turner & going for the quail eggs and put the chicken eggs in a grape container in the other half of the incubator. So the quail eggs were subjected to 60+ degrees of humidity for 5-6 days before hatching. I was prepared to not get very many so I was very happy to have 19 out of 25 hatch!

Not that this helps with hatching, but I have some MF d'Uccle hatching in a couple of weeks. I got eggs from babymakers 6 . Got some from her last year she has BEAUTIFUL chickens. I have some silver leghorns too ( these chickens are now the bane of my existence, they STILL look like cream legbars)

Do you have any pictures of your MF d'Uccle's?

Petrocks langshams are awesome, id go with them too.

Lol Yeah I told her I want some but my post to her probably got lost in the one I did.

usually its not bad, just depends on what they drop. I used to clean my hatcher once a month , but I do not put water in the trays so there is never a chance at mold. I use cups and sponges, and hatch in egg cartons so there is virtualy no clean up. I don't know what happened to make it a nightmare, but I'm sorry!!

For mine, I had to have the last little chick in there for a few days because I didn't have anywhere else to keep it because the others were pulling and pecking at it. I couldn't put it in with the others, so there was poo and stuff in there that molded!

My first cots of the year hatched yesterday. I got 2 weeks of clear eggs, the girls started before the boys did, but we are looking good now. Hopefully my list of 20 people still wants quail.

You have a list of 20 people that want quail? Do you actually sell them?

NO its easy and fast fast. You skin them and all the guts come out in a package. Mario can do a bird in 5 min or less.

Can I borrow Mario to process my quail?

This weekend is the Master Gardner heirloom herb and vegetable sale. I'm so excited. This year between the front and the aquaponics I swear I'm going to have vegetables!!! I WILL NOT BE DENIED.

Where is this at?

Ali707, Just to show you how absolutely adorable Langshan chicks are, check out these pics from the hatches I did last year with eggs from Skyline and Pawhead.

Black

Blue

White & Splash
Put me on the list for eggs too please my buff orp may become broody soon! She's acting very irritable and puffy lol.

Quote: I use Lysol all purpose cleaner--lemon scented. It kills 99.9% of germs and smells good too!

I hatch in cartons so most of the debris are caught in it. I get as much out and into the cartons and then take the bottom to the shower. It all gets a soaking and then a cleaner spray and then I let it sit briefly. I use a tooth brush to scrub the wires and gently clean the bottom with it.

I also use a Q tip to clean the vent holes. It is amazing how much can get into those. I then use the shower to rinse it all off and the let it air dry. The top with the electronics get a careful cleaning with a sprayed wash rag. I also use air duster to clean the fans and the temperature sensor.

I did all of that quickly on Monday after hatching SG Dorkings and Delawares. Now I am hatching blue black and splash Black Australorps. I may wind up with all black though.....We will see......

WOW! They are amazing!!! I love that sassy tail they all have! Please put me on your list for down the road. I am setting some this weekend so I am good to wait for a few months!!! I like all the colors!!!

Ask deb if her bobwhite eggs are different. I only know cot eggs. Should be similar size, but different protein makeups and yolk to white ratio. I'M interested to see what you think of the bobwhites!

hey, those of you who got your oxine from Amazon, was it available on prime? it is not at the moment, I was just wondering if I should wait or not...
Thanks, Shantih!

Now I think that I need Cots, too!!! I love the speckled eggs!

I purchase my Oxine from Revival. I think that's where it is from if you buy it on Amazon. I have prime and have never seen it available on prime. I found that the shipping was less if I ordered it straight from Revival.
