I processed my first chicken yesterday. I couldn't get up the courage to do the dispatching part (I was too "chicken"

). But I did the rest. It was delicious!!

oh yeah! Home raised are the best! We like our Marans for meat birds. And...we have crossed the Marans with Australorps and the resulting offspring mature faster and get bigger then the parents. We are about to have our first pullets from a cross back start laying. so, 3/4 Marans...waiting to see how good they lay and what color the eggs are.

Hatching Baskets! I found one that holds 6 eggs and 6 will fit in the Genesis. There will be enough free space to put egg outside the baskets too! I lined the bottom with foam matting. You can work with 7 of your hens at a time!

Thank you! That sounds great! I appreciate you putting up with my requests. To explain to the rest of you, I not only want Ron to hatch eggs for me, I want to do multiple single matings. I want to know the rooster & hen parents of each chick. So there needs to be a way to separate eggs in the hatcher so they can be identified. Breeders use different types of hatching or pedigree baskets for this. I'm a pain sometimes.

Looks wonderful. Good for you! I don't like the killing or bleeding out parts either.

What Breed and how old? I am really looking forward to seeing what the Bresse taste like....
When do you move to Cabo? Are you still planning on getting Bresse down there?
Quote: The plan makes perfect sense and I am happy to help with getting this part of Breed improvement going for you. This is a long term project with the goal of improving a rare and endangered breed!

I can't wait until you get a Rooster that is completely SOP and up to weight! Even your Culls are amazing.

I had never heard of Campines before sitting on this thread, and now I think I'm in love!

There was a Golden Campine Rooster at the Animal exchange that I could have taken home for free yesterday. I was so happy that I could identify him!

How sad! I'm going to have Langshan eggs shipped to me in the next month or so. I've never had eggs shipped to me and I'm nervous about it after hearing all the horror stories. I have a nice mail carrier but she doesn't deliver my mail all 6 days. So, I should ask the shipper to request that they hold the package at the PO?
I love my postman. He brings my shipped eggs to the door and if I am not home and always knocks he put them in the shade. He is the best!!! I started giving him eating eggs and he is super grateful. Works out well. If you plan to get eggs shipped to you, I suggest making friends with your postman or woman.
