California - Northern

Her face looks a lot like my old JG's face. Very wise looking birds.
I have 2 English Orpington hens, which are extra poofy in feathering. We get temps up to 115 in summer here (usually just for a week or so) and I've never lost any bird to the heat. (also knocks on wood) Just make sure they have plenty of water and shade.

This is the small one. My son has dubbed them "The Fat Girls".

Quote: Hi Papa Brooder,

Some breeds, the slow feathering ones especially, look like monsters during the molts. The problem is, people don't want to take pictures of them when they are ugly. I think pictures should be shared so that we can learn what normal is. I will share some of my Black Australorps.

Cute, beautiful babies. Who wouldn't love them?

Vulture stage at 6 or seven weeks. This is Sienna with Hatchery RIRs

And this is what they looked like in April of 2012, at 13 months old:

Should I be worried that my 2 marans are picking at my Orps? Especially when they are roosting. No blood but it seems kinda mean?

If it doesn't make sense - I blame autocorrect. Sent from my sweet iPhone 4s.

They are rare in the US and are from the Basque area of Spain and France.

Here is a link: http://wp.me/PKyVy-me

The above site shows the Basque breeds. The picture of the Marraduna Rooster looks a lot like Seiji. I hope to have hatching egg in the Fall from him.

Ron

Very attractive roosters! Are the Marraduna hens going to have similar coloring? I looked on your link, but I only saw hens of other varieties

Oh, the Hens are very different looking. This is from May 26th, 2012.

They are all so pretty

Yes they are! I thought maybe they'd have some barring, which is really nice looking on the roo. I remember you posted a pic before, but was still trying to wrap my brain around the unfamiliar name, so it didn't stick. You'll have to show us what they're like as adults. The one with her head down looks like she has some blue/gray, a pretty color combo with the orangey. I like it when a breed has some color variation. Makes it more interesting and easier to tell them apart!

Hi ZooWee. As long as there's no blood or feather plucking (too young for this now) then they are just working out the pecking order and it's probably best not to interfere. Chicks also use their beaks to explore everything, so they might also just be satisfying curiosity.

How are the goslings? Hope they're better.

Whew ok. It's not ALL the day do all day but I did notice it. As you can see in the picture. LOL

I want to say the goslings are much better today but I am afraid to jinx myself. But Sarah's eyes look better. Still all matted around her eyes- but that could be from me putting neosporin on it to keep them moistened. (they flesh around the eyes was drying and cracking)
