Remember, according to chicken math, each breed only counts as 1.

Thanks Kim!

I am looking forward to processing the Roos on Saturday.

I think the 2 Marans I have are cockerels...which means it's very likely one of them is going to be eaten eventually assuming I want to keep either. I still don't know what my other 6 have yielded me and if I like one of those roos better. What is a good age to process this bird do you think?

Question: for those that buy meat birds...is it cheaper to buy the meat strains OR buy the cockerels of a breed that makes a decent meat bird? Sexed males are pretty cheap from the hatcheries. Is there a disadvantage to buying sexed males of a breed that makes a good meat bird over buying straight run meat bird strains (often a hybrid)....

Chicken Math is getting very popular!

Grr the foggy days are back today, and the chickens don't like it. My oldest hen has had some kind of chronic bronchitis going on for months and months now, (heavy breathing, head shaking) she is active though, a good thing. Any suggestions? I tried Poly-vi-sol, and I'm worming them right now (because I've been seeing a couple of those poops)

Here is a 16 week old Pullet, not Mine:

There is some barring, especially around the neck. There is a large variety in the way they look.

I read through the first 20 pages of the EO Basque thread - a great breed which seems to have very passionate fans! My 9 pullets are 9 different breeds so you know I like variety.

That's one reason I've always liked EEs, but the Marraduna Basques sound like they have an excellent temperament as well as color variation, AND practicality (I like chickens that know how to act like chickens!). Are there many others in N. CA who are raising them? Wish I was in a situation to try breeding.
