California - Northern

I'm in Fortuna, just south of eureka, does that still count as north?

Can't go much farther and still be a Californian. One of my brothers graduated from Humboldt State(sorry for the Old Name CSU Humboldt).

It was so funny today. I was moving my roosters back outside from the Garage this morning and the one Partridge Rock rooster that bites me was giving me the eye. I had some rubberized gloves on, so I slowly moved my gloved hand in and of course he bit and held on, so I pulled him out of the kennel and grabbed his feet.

I guess I was fishing for rooster....

Tomorrow I get to make chicken dinner

Poor rooster won't even know what happened. Hope dinner is yummy. I think chicken enchiladas sound good...just sayin'. :p

One of my Marans oh gosh he def has to be a dude. His comb is getting SO big and he totally put the Buff cockerel in his place. He is very handsome. He has fine feathery feet and so far pretty gentle. I think I should mark him for watching as a keeper right? If I handle him a lot will this help keep his temperament more even? I want a nice roo- all others will end up being sold or eaten. :D

Oh oh anddddd I saw a BC Marans Roo + Buff Orp hen cross offspring and I gotta say I find them VERY attractive. I wonder if this cross would put some of the BCM sweetness into the BO with some of the coppery coloring and although not a deep dark color egg...maybe a rich caramel color? Keeping 1 rooster and only 2 kinds of chickens will allow me to mix one breed and keep one line pure. I am so excited to see what comes of all this! eeeee!

Heres a link to the cross with loads of pictures

What do you all feed your chickens? Those of you with a mixed flock (males and females together)? I am feeding the chicks chick starter right now but when the bag is gone I will be moving them to Flock Raiser - since my ducks eat it too. It has 20% protein though. I had planned to feed this to my layers too- but offer oyster shell buffet style 24/7. Is there anything else I can offer to help with their diet? Will I need to cut the FR with something to reduce the protein levels? (with the ducks I have to add oats) Seems like all the stores here offer only starter and layer- Flock Raiser is the only between feed that is neither. Sorry for all the posts. I have a busy weekend so I won't be bothering y'all much then.

I am going to feed the chickens in the pens with roosters Grower feed with free choice calcium. I have been getting Organic non-soy non-corn layer and grower from Azure Standard. They are like a co-op and drop orders off of a truck. The brand is Cascade and is from Washington State. I like it but it is expensive. Soon I will be trying king feed. They have a natural non-soy that is less expensive. The layer flock gets layer feed outside and I have a coop feeder that has either scratch grain or winter wheat(from Azure) along with Ultra Kibble, a scoop of kelp sea weed and omega booster(Mana Pro). They mostly eat the layer. I have to refill the coop feeder every three days or so.

If the King Feed works out, I may start just using it.

Have fun this weekend!

I can't believe my little Baby Shamus just turned three months old! He is the little duckling seen in my profile picture. I hatched him from an egg in a makeshift incubator after my mallard hen,Natasha, changed her mind about sitting on his egg. Time really flies
