A couple of snapshots.

Now this is the kind of sleeping chick that gets your heart thumping.

Our week old goslings cruising in the living room with DH.
snacking on chopped lettuce here.
it's amazing how quickly they grow.

And tomorrow the rest of the crew is supposed to arrive

The goslings are so smart and so personable........................I could have just them!
How are you keeping them from pooping on your floor???

I'm dying. The first chick is so cute.

Baby goosies! I'm extra extra dying! I'm trying to hatch some more now. Hubby and I agree all baby birds just about are adorable but for us- baby geese are just the absolute cutest. What type did you get?

I love the Africans and I wouldn't mind having a dewlap toulouse pair too. hehe

A bator really shouldn't smell that bad. Clean it out really...really good before hatching again. I would add a tiny bit of bleach to the water in the humidity tray. Not so much that it smells strongly of bleach..just a few drops. Maybe add a tiny amount again when adding water during lock down too. It sounds like you has some issues with bacteria and that can cause sticky chicks, rough navels, unabsorbed yolks, and death of chicks. My foam bator rarely smells...other than a faint smell of eggs or a wet egg/chick smell during hatching. You shouldn't have condensation during incubation or hatching either. Make sure your vents are wide open..the extra humidity is hard on the electronics, causes ideal conditions for bacterial growth and most likely lower your hatch rate too.

I hope your next hatch is less stressful:)

Thanks for the ideas.

I did bleach it the last time because I did quail eggs. All was fresh and clean and really didn't smell bad to me until Sunday after the height of the hatch and Saturday night the humidity went up to 75% and there was condensation forming inside from all the new babies. Prior to that humidity was about 65% at the highest.

It wasn't a rotten smell per se but a sticky sweet, hot humid smell and it was just not to my liking. I am sensitive to smells so I may just be whining about it too much. Plus, I would just sit there and stare at the eggs at times and the smells would go right up my nose from the vent on top.

On the Genesis I have the one vent at the top, (I already lost the red plug) and the newer Genesis one has small holes towards the bottom of the bator all the way around that are open all of the time. There is no way to close them really unless I wanted to do something like stick a q-tip in there. I thought about adding rice too late to see if it would help bring it back down.

I too hope my next hatch is less stressful. :)

PetRock - I have my Oxine and I am not certain of the mixing ratio. Mine has all the directions smudged out. Looks like it got wet or something and I can't read most of it.... since you are the Oxine advocate, do you know the mixing ratio?

ETA:: OHHHH you mean add bleach to the water during the hatch! I get it! I will try that. Thanks!

I agree. I will tape legs or toes, but they have to improve to normal in the first couple days. I haven't had to tape a leg or foot in YEARS, then my last hatch I had 2 with a slight splayed leg. I taped them and 2 days later removed the tape, they've been fine since.

I have babied some special chicks and even 1 cockerel that I found out later was partially blind. Having to cull them at that point after all the care I have given was so hard, but necessary. Some of them went through some terrible circumstances too - the one cockerel got his head pecked up really badly. (before I realized he was partially blind)

All my chicks go on vitamins for the first week or two, then it's up to them after that. I would treat for cocci if I ever had it, but so far, I haven't needed to.
None of them look like a welsummer. The 2nd one could be a female Cream Legbar.
The head is dark enough to be a CL pullet, but the body is too gray:

I have been fooled by them before so this might be one of the 15% that does not work for auto sexing.

They were only running around for about 15 minutes while we played with them. This afternoon they are going out to the outside shed from the house brooders. I like to keep my babies indoors about a week so I can watch them closely. After I put them back, I had to clean up about 20 spots, LOL. We are in the middle of remodeling the house. As soon as I finish all my painting, the carpet is all being removed and replaced. You wouldn't even believe how old the carpet is, believe me, you couldn't make it worse with a little goose poop, LOL

There is a pair of brown Chinese and a trio of blue Americans. Currently in transit to me (supposed to be here tomorrow) is a pair of brown Africans and sixteen ducklings, four each of Cayuga, Silky, Welsh Harlequin & Silver Appleyard. I forgot how much I enjoyed waterfowl, it's been close to 20 years since I had any. The two Cayuga that I hatched out a couple of months ago were the gateway drug, LOL

Not PetRock, but we're both Deb/Debi. I put 1/4 teas in a gallon of water. I use that as the water in my incubators for hatching. I put 1/4 teas in a quart of water and that's what I use when I'm disinfecting my incubators. 1/4 teas equals about 12 drops (I forget exactly, but I measured it out once)

Well it was a little discouraging to see that. It is just a bummer because I had the largest losses on the shipped eggs. I think 9 didn't hatch of the ones that went in to lockdown. I had to dispense with the last shipped egg to hatch last night too and it was not my idea of a good time. It just wasn't getting better it was actually getting worse. SO, I believe I have two viable Wheaten Ameracauna's to hatch out of 15 total shipped eggs. Let's hope one is a girl. :)

My numbers were 45 eggs, 6 clears, three early quitters. 9 no hatchers.... 27 hatched, one culled

. Total 26 babies that I have no idea what to do with.....lol.

Alli I looked at some of mine too. The ones that I thought were viable at lockdown all were. They had fully formed chicks inside and it makes me sad. My husband reminded me to focus on what is in the brooder not on what didn't make it there. He's pretty great like that.

I think you did a super job. 26 out of 35 is a good rate. 7 of 14 is what I got then last night I lost one. It had pasted and I had taken care of that but it died in the night. so I am down to 6 of 14. I will ask for a Brinsea Mini Advance for my birthday and leave the future hatching to it and the broodies.

Question re Poly Vi Sol, Should I just give reg/sugar water instead of the Durvet? I don't want to OD Curly on vitamins.

Well, Ron - then I have no idea other than it's certainly NOT a wellie.

Bottom chick here is a welsummer.
Deann breeds Cream Legbar x Crele Penes--That very well could be one of those. The ones I hatched were all pullets so I do not have a picture of the Cockerels.

It could be an Olive Egger or a Cream Legbar. It is probably a pullet like you said though.
